- See Less -Mary McConneloug proved she was tough competition in 2003 when she took her first NORBA National podium finish over three-time world champion Alison Sydor in the women?s cross-country event at Mount Snow. She went on to reap the benefits of that break-through season when she claimed the U.S. Women?s National Cross-Country Championships and earned the right to wear the stars and stripes.
Mary was born the middle of five children. Her father ran a heating and sheet metal business, and her mom ran the household. The children went to Catholic schools, and family recreation consisted of camping trips and music. Mary played soccer, took ballet and piano lessons and loved to sing. It wasn?t until moving to Oregon after college with her biker boyfriend that she discovered the thrill of racing.
On and off the bike, Mary is concerned for the environment. She tries to use her bike as transportation to save gas. She also buys eco friendly products and food so there can be nice places to ride for years to come.
Mary didn?t start racing until later in life after she had developed a love for the outdoors, but she has steadily made a name for herself over the last few years. In 2001, she took 9th overall in the NORBA National Championship Series and 5th overall in the Super Cup Cyclocross Series. 2002 saw impressive results with a pair of 8th place finishes in the cross-country events at Sea Otter and Big Bear, a 6th place finish in the Big Bear short track, and a 5th place finish at the Iron Horse Classic.
