RIP STXC?

Colt McElwaine 3 years ago

Looking over the new plans for the US pro XCT, hidden amongst the new name and first time venues, you'll notice something missing: Short Track. Aside from Sea Otter, no 2009 series event has an STXC on their proposed schedules. What I think: Short Track, to those regular on the National scene, has become as much a part of racing as Cross Country. For those at the top level, it's another shot at a good result. It's a fallback if things should go wrong in the XC. It's a chance for Cody Peterson, Troy Wells, and those who are not pure climbers to shine on the biggest stage. It requires small plots of land, and can be put on virtually anywhere. It's the next logical step for a roadie turned 'cross racer thinking of trying the MTB this year. And, It's the most fan friendly of all disciples, meaning (most importantly) the best bang for a sponsors buck. Right? Apparently not. Why else would Short Track get the axe? Is Super D the race of the future? Are more spectators a priority for the US cup? The 12,000 ft., 24 mile loop XC races didn't bring any spectators. If Short Track is not the answer, what is? What do you think?

Lame. I've only been to one short track event, but it was by far the best spectator experience I've had watching ANY cycling event live.

If STXC racing disappears, I would be very disappointed. Some of the races I videotaped in the past years at Mt.Snow, VT and Windham, NY are documented here:
As far as filming, STXC is Mountain Biking's best bet at getting any sort of TV coverage. (aside from gravity events)

Check out these articles to here what a couple of the Pros have to say about it.

Bringing STXC to big cities venues is the way to go to attract more spectators. Just take a look at the Red Bull sponsored Crushed Ice events in Prague and Quebec:

What??!! No STXC?

Has anyone actually heard a reason from the organizers? Seems like they're just throwing away money.

-Mortal Kombat for Sega Genesis is the greatest video game ever.

- I disagree, although it is a very good game, I think Donkey Kong is the greatest video game ever.
-Donkey Kung sucks!
- You know what? You suck!

I never raced the Short Track myself but it was fun to hang around after my race and watch some of my teammates. Seems like it would be a relatively cheap race to put on too?

I'd rather pay the extra $40 and do two races than spend all that money getting to a National just for one race.

...plus I suck at Super D.
