What would you wish for?

Colt McElwaine 3 years ago

This site exists for one reason: This sport needs some love!

It seems like just yesterday that I was hurrying home from a Sunday group ride to catch Roland and Ryder doing battle on OLN. Chevy Trucks was pumping in prize money and North American riders ruled supreme on the world stage. All was good. Or so we thought.

Just a few years later, NORBA's (soon to be NMBS's) were nothing more than high altitude dust bowls offering no prize money. Remember that great ride Ryan Trebon had going at Big Bear in 2004 before he flatted and lost it to Travis Brown? Remember Shonny V. dominated the XC and STXC that weekend? Remember those crazy fleece board shorts that guy was selling...

You don't? I didn't think so.

Why would you. You probably didn't spend the money to travel out there. There was no video, no Cable TV highlights. There were a handful of pictures, sure. And I'm sure someone wrote a paragraph or two for some website, where it got a link in size 8 font somewhere between the latest doping violation and what shampoo Lance uses on Thursdays.

Skip ahead to 2009. North American Mountain Bikers are coming off their best year in recent memory on the World Cup. NMBS races had UCI sanctioning and even prize money. Jason Sager was freed, Emily Batty showed potential to someday wear rainbow stripes, and Todd Wells, at 34 years of age, had the best year of his life. Mountain Bike racing at the highest level is starting to become fun again.

Enter, Cyclingdirt. We are here to fill the void between The Best and the rest. We're overflowing with ideas of how to make our sport the best it can be, but we need your help.

What do you want to see improve in the sport of Mountain Biking? What do you and your teammates complain about after a bad race? What do you want more of? What do you want that does not exist?

Give us your wish for this sport, and let us help make it a reality.

how about we get a comprehensive race calendar on here? a 'one stop shop' if you will for all the national stuff, regional stuff, etc... hyperlinks to event websites would make this a killer application for people planning out their seasons.
Check back soon TJ, It's already in the works!

Why there isn't already a good one out there is baffling!

There should be some more attention on the College Racing scene. People like Brent Bookwalters, Chloe Forsman, Jamie Dinkins, Tristan Cowie, and Scott Stewart are the new age of Mountain biking and Cycling. There needs to be some focus on their successes in College races and see the unnoticed talent of the student athletes that are to their quality.
This clayton is brilliant!

I'd like to see some race results posted ASAP after events--especially with the regional and national series races. Maybe I'm impatient but it always seems like a loooong wait.
Agreed Chloe! Take a look on our results page. results are up from yesterday's Kends Cup West #1. Good luck finding them on othernews.com.

With today's technology and everyone having internet wherever they go, there's no reasons those results, especially national level, couldn't be up in a matter of minutes.

I really wanted to write something but to be honest the coverage I enjoy reading the most is out there (although sometimes hard to find). Personally I enjoy reading riders blogs, especially when they write about the course the raced on, the different characteristics and challenges along with the battles that took place (Sam J does a pretty amazing job at this). So maybe this can be a request for more of it, or help me find more of these!

Reading about it is great. And you're right- if you know where to find all the articles and blogs you can piece everything together pretty well. But what if you could watch the race itself or see helmet cam footage of the course and hear interviews with the riders on everything from tactics to tire pressure... That's what I'm talking about!

What are those crazy Europeans doing? I want to know how they hold their handlebars and how they sit on their bicycle seats?

Seriously Colt how do they train?
I agree. We get little coverage of the races, which we deal with. But we get NO coverage of training!

The two hour race is great, but what about the 2,000 hours of training that went in to it? I want to see what Adam Craig does on a Wednesday that makes him such a great bike handler. I want to go in the gym and see these Todd Wells weight workouts we all read about on his blog.
Why can't we cover that?

mountain bike technique videos showing how to improve riding skills would be good.

Also some more helmet cam videos showing trails in different cities and locations around the U.S. would be cool.
Technique videos are on the way!

Helmet cam is a great idea too. But why just trails? Why not within the race to show the action out in the woods the spectators never get?

Colt McElwaine 3 years ago

Jood stuff Jeremy. I can tell you for sure that we'll be covering plenty of grassroots level events!

I'd like to see a US Cup or national event within driving distance to Minneapolis. TV coverage, even at the local grassroots level, would be really cool.

More attention given to the big regional races.
