Bonus of using this setup, it's lighter than the XT front der. by 83 grams if you're comparing the 34.9 clamp style. the setup featured gains weight by adding the braze-on mount and chain catcher so I'm not sure of what the benefit may be? You can adjust an XT or XTR to only move for double rings - it's very easy.
I saw someone mention durability, not a concern, front der. all do the same thing and are pretty much out of harms way when cycling aside from rare accidents.
I've used both setups with much success but the weight savings of 83gr switching from the 34.9 der. on my '08 Epic Marathon Carbon made me stick w/ the Dura 7900 34.9 clamp-on. The bike came out of the box size Large at 25lbs, now it's under 22.5lbs w/ cage, computer, pedals and a blast to race!

This set-up is only needed if you're going to change front chainrings around alot. I've got an XX drivetrain on my epic and it shifts amazing, theres absolutely nothing wrong with the front derailleur that sram makes.

The average joe more than likely isn't going to be swapping things back and forth enough to warrant such a set-up. And honestly, the sram derailleur bolts right on and doesn't need to be "set-up" for proper spacing in relation to the chainrings. While it is easier to get to, it's overkill as far as the application goes. But that said, it does look pretty cool.

I don't think it's smart for the average joe to be using a light weight road derailleur on a mountain bike... There's a reason they make different products for road and MTB... that sh!t breaks!

PDX-This is not a current production option for the average Joe at this time. However, a skilled mechanic studied in the black arts of tinkering such as Matt Opperman or "Kona Dusty" could probably make a solution for you!
