The series does a great job of connecting all these little regional scenes together. I'm from cincy and I can comment on the "scene" in Louisville. It's not quite there yet. I've raced portland and madison USGP events and to try and compare the atmosphere and the racing to either events is comical. Sure there are plenty of entries filling all categories in Louisville, but the vendor area isn't jam packed with food and expo and beer! It lacks the love and passion with fans.. and not just racers sticking around after they've finished. With that being said It would be sad to see USGP go, but it wont stop the growth. Look at OVCX? Just 10 years ago it was 3-4 races. Now it's added UCI 3... and nabbed a spot in the cross after dark series. The midwest is coming up big time! |

From a sponsorship and racers standpoint. There definitely needs to be a solid national series like the USGP. It provides the most exposure and depth of fields. It is what is driving the expansion of the sport. Grassroots is the core of CX, but at the end of the day grassroots isn't what brings in the big $$ from sponsors. Why not go big and shoot for big sponsors such as PEPSI-Co or those that sponsor america's $500,000 cash payout Hy-vee Triathlon. hy-veetriathlon.com/community/Sponsors (dot) aspx |

Thanks to Cyclocross Magazine for breaking this story. Thanks for keeping the discussion going, looks like it is officially cancelled if i read between the lines of the cxmagazine report. I bet worlds is okay. And scenes were there before the USGP, and will be there after. USGP didn't go to random places and take the field of dreams approach. |

Building on this discussion, do we need UCi sanctioning? If a race can put on a great show, and come up with a big enough purse to attract top talent, does it matter that there are points? At the end of the day, don't North Americans have to race World Cup races in Europe to be truly competitive and draw top sponsors? |

I'm right there with Anonymous Coward...don't jump to conclusions about pre-USGP cyclocross scenes (that aren't New England or Portland). Wisconsin and the Midwest in general have had huge cx scenes since at least the 90's; Chicago hosted the SuperCup series. That history is a large part of why WI and KY have become staples on the USGP circuit. The sport in this country would take a huge blow if the USGP did not continue, but it would not be the end. |

Love ya Colt and sorry you weren't aware of the CX scene in Louisville before the USGP. It did exist and because of the excitement of the sport in the area and the growing OVCX series, the USGP found Louisville. It, along with the Cincy3 weekend, took us to the next level. We would sorely, sorely miss the USGP, but our CX survival doesn't depend on it. In the meantime, my money is on Joan and Bruce. They got this. |
