SCPS: The Final Showdown- Nor Cal vs. So Cal

Bakersfield, CA- With Saturdays event marking the end for the SoCal Prestige series, presented by SPY Optic, and the crowning of many series overall categories winners, Sunday would be the last CX race of the long eventful 2011-12 season. The event, like last year was the Northern versus Southern California championships race, an event for bragging rights and a true California champion jersey to each of the categories winners.

The course had no surprise rains or gusty winds to challenge riders, the cool sunny B-town weather was perfect for the final day. It was just going to be the previous days fast, challenging, Euro style course but run in reverse with a few turns changed to make it flow and consistently test competitors. The start again was a fast road straight into a sweeping left but entering back into the main expo area. This presented riders with the most difficult turns, climbs, and run-ups right away into their laps. And as they hit the grass section on the backside of the course the elevation change was much more than the previous day and it really seemed to take its toll on riders later in each race.

With SoCal winning the overall the year before NorCal definitely showed this year with a vengence and were winning a lot of the events. In the masters men events we saw NorCal take the top spots in 35, 45, and 55+. The single speed of course went to NorCal and the recently crowned National Champion Aaron Bradford and teammate Scott Chapin (Rock Lobster) rode away from the competition. Ty Hathaway (Mudfoot) gave a good battle but the Lobster men seemed to have the gearing and course absolutely dialed. The consistency of all the SoCal racers all day still had them leading as the elite events were coming.

Elite Women:

After some impressive racing from the strong NorCal Cal Giant Berries/Specialized team all day, Gina Hall took to the start in the elite women and competitors new it was going to be rough. Hall recently won the masters 45-49 national championships and definitely still has good fitness.

When the whistle blew the women came sprinting down the road and it was hard to tell if it was Hall or Ellen Sherrill (Bike Station Aptos) who went into the dirt and came around the sweeping left turn first. The women lined up as the course had a nice groove into the next set of turns before the first steep punchy climb. Third wheel was Sofia Gomez Villafane (Ibis/buy-cell), Amanda Schaper (Ritte Racing), Christine Probert-Turner (The TEAM SoCalCross/Turner Bikes), ultra promoter and overall SoCal Series winner Dorothy Wong (The TEAM SoCalCross), and others.

Going into the climb Turner made a move passing Schaper and up front Sherrill was first to start the descent. By the time the women were leaving the main expo portion of the course on the dirt straight Sherrill and Hall were already starting to get some room on the field.

The women came back down the road charging into lap two. It was Hall with Sherrill and just a few seconds back it was Turner who moved past Gomez for third. The chase was already starting to break apart as Gomez, Schaper, and Wong were all more than five seconds apart and the rest of the women scattered behind them.

The next two laps had Sherrill leading through the climbs then Hall opening a gap down through the descents. The two were riding strong and gaining space on Turner but she was still on a mission. Halfway through Hall moved ahead of Sherrill and from there continued to open space from her lead and second place.

Into the final lap the national champion stayed strong and soloed in for another title jersey this season. Sherrill held on for 2nd and Turner the same in 3rd. The youngster Gomez showed a great race and rolled in to take 4th and Schaper just behind in 5th.

Elite Men:

The field was stacked and all eyes of course were on another Cal Giant Berries/Specialized rider, as Andy Jacques-Maynes took the line. But to make things even more interesting B-town promoter Sam Ames and renowned announcer Dave Towle started calling to the spectators for a first lap cash prime. Ames offered up the first portion of the money and while officials were talking to racers the two were collecting aloud.

Just before the whistle blew there was $160 being announced for the fastest first lap. The men were off and Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/Focus) took the hole shot with Jacques-Maynes second wheel. The entire field was hungry as riders where making their moves to get in a good position. As the riders came into the wall Prenzlow and Jacque-Maynes battled up the run-up where the Cal Giant rider took the lead. Prenzlow held on and the field chased behind. But by the end of the Fly-over Jacques-Maynes moved ahead to begin his gap off the field.

Into the back part of the course Jason Siegle (SDG/Felt p.b. iRT) passed Prenzlow and continued to push his pace in chase of the leader. Here the race for 1st and 2nd were decided as these two soloed an entire hour for the first two steps. The chase was the real battle as a large group of riders were together for most of the race.

With three to go hometown boy Gareth “Cru” Feldstein (Ritte Racing) and Prenzlow broke away from the group and started to work together to solidify their podium spots. Krishna Dole (Sheila Moon) stayed close chasing the two but could not get back on their wheels.

On the last lap Prenzlow led up through the back grass section then Feldstein passed onto the road. Prenzlow let him lead out the sprint and came around him hard but Feldstein pulled back and grabbed 3rd in a photo finish to beat him by .02 of a second. Prenzlow was 4th and Dole rode in for 5th.
It was a great finish to the cyclocross season and a fantastic event, all of which was definitely not possible without the hard work of Dorothy Wong, Sam Ames and all of the local volunteers and sponsors.  This event already has people talking for next year as SoCal has taken the title home again and NorCal is requesting a further north location.

Elite Men

Katie Compton earned a silver medal in the 2011 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships. Due to a fifth-place ranking at the 2011 World Championships, the United States qualified six starters for the race. The 2012 national champion Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-Focus) and Tim Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./ Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com), who was the second-ranked American rider in the rankings (17th), were automatic qualifiers for the team. In addition to his 2012 national championship, Powers is the top-ranked rider (11th) in the UCI’s rankings with 984 points and has registered a pair of top-15 finishes at UCI World Cup races.
Joining Powers and Johnson as discretionary selections to the team are: Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./LTS-Felt), Jamey Driscoll (Winooski, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com), Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Planet Bike) and Christopher Jones (Auburn, Calif./Team Rapha-Focus). Trebon, who is one slot behind Johnson in the UCI rankings, has accumulated 365 points in 10 American UCI category-1 races while Driscoll has amassed 244 points and is 30th in the UCI rankings. Page finished 12th at the 2011 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships and has registered three top-25 finishes at World Cups this season. Jones has accrued 55 ranking points and is ranked 68th by the UCI.



Elite Women
Each of five women comprising the American elite women’s team are automatic qualifiers. Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rabobank-Giant) rides in on the heels of collecting the eighth national championship of her career. After placing second in the 2011 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, Compton has collected three top-five finishes at UCI World Cup events, including winning the first race in Plzen, Czech Republic on Oct. 16, 2011. Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Crankbrothers Race Club), who has a pair of top-15 finishes at World Cups, including a sixth-place result at Plzen, Czech Republic, is also an automatic qualifier. By virtue of finishing 10th at the UCI World Cup race in Namur, Belgium, Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wisc./Cyclocrossworld-Cannondale Cyclocrossworld) earned a spot. Meredith Miller (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) and Nicole Duke (Boulder, Colo./Cyclocrossworld-Cannondale Cyclocrossworld) each registered a top-15 result at a UCI World Cup race with Miller's coming in Tabor, Czech Republic and Duke's coming in Plzen, Czech Republic to each qualify a spot. Miller also has amassed the most UCI ranking points from 10 American category-1 races with 327.



U23
Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Team Rapha-Focus) was the lone rider to earn an automatic spot on the team after winning the U23 race at the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships and registering a 10th-place finish at the UCI World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic. Joining McDonald in the U23 race will be discretionary selection Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized). Kaiser placed second in the U23 race at nationals and was the second-best American U23 rider in three out of four domestic qualification events.



Junior Men
The winner of the junior men 17-18 race, Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Team Redline) and the highest-ranked riders in three of four domestic selection races, Andrew Dillman (Fairdale, Ky./Bob's Red Mill) were two automatic qualifiers for the American team. While Dillman recorded 26 points in the domestic selection races, Owen was the second-ranked American rider with 21 points.

Also contesting the junior men’s race are discretionary selections Richard Cypress Gorry (Payson, Ariz./Whole Athlete-Specialized), Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) and Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Clif Bar Development Cyclo Cross Team). Ortenblad placed second, Gorry finished third and White was fifth in the junior men 17-18 race.

The 2012 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships begin Saturday, Jan. 28 with the juniors and U23 races before culminating with the elite races on Sunday, Jan. 29.

(Jan. 6, 2012) -- The 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships reached its penultimate day Saturday and crowned eight more national champions, including the U23 men's and Collegiate women's champions. The temperatures began to reflect the calendar as the record highs earlier in the competition yielded to lower digits more common of Badger Prairie Park outside Madison, Wisc.




U23 Men




In the day's main event, Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Team Rapha-Focus) turned five of the six laps of the race in under nine minutes to win by 2:21. McDonald's fastest lap was 8:37 and his slowest was 9:03 en route to an impressive 2:21 margin of victory. Cody Kaiser (El Dorado, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) bested a hard-charging Jeffrey Bahnson (Newark, Del./Van Dessel Factory Team) by 46 seconds to earn the silver medal while Bahnson secured the bronze.




"I wanted to keep the power down the whole race," McDonald said. "With the luck I've had in the past I wanted to have a little room for error. I just kind of got the gap and settled in. That was the goal and it worked out."




Junior 17-18 Men




Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Team Redline) earned his seventh straight national title in the junior men’s 17-18 event, jumping out to the early lead. The man with the most consecutive junior titles on record, Owen was able to open a nearly 10-second gap on Andrew Dillman (Fairdale, Ky./Red Zone Cycling) who was chasing hard when he went down on lap two and lost several places. With Dillman down, that left Tobin Ortenbland (Santa Cruz, Calif./California Giant-Specialized) and Richard Cypress Gorry (Payson, Ariz./Whole Athlete Specialized) to fight it out for the silver. Ortenbland was able to hold off Gorry in a sprint finish for second while Dillman made a nice recovery for fourth. Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes) recorded a strong final lap to grab the fifth and final podium spot.




Collegiate Women




DI

Marian University’s flexed their muscles handily taking first and second place in the Division I women’s race. Racine, Wisconsin’s Kaitlin Antonneau and her Marian teammate, multi-time junior national champion Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif.) distanced themselves from the start. Antonneau was able to open a small gap on her teammate after a bobble on the first lap forced Rivera off course.




“I was just going to play it by ear, but then she (Rivera) made a mistake and I just pushed on,” explained Antonneau post-race.




Emily Shields (Salisbury, N.C.) of rival Lees-McRae finished nearly three minutes behind Rivera for bronze. Fort Lewis College’s Sarah Sturm (Durango, Colo.) came in next and Katherine Shields (Salisbury, N.C./Lees-McRae College) joined her teammate on the podium in fifth. Beginning what will be a fierce battle for the team title, Marian, Lees-McRae and Fort Lewis locked up all of the race’s first 13 places.

Rebecca Gross (Lakewood, Colo./Uninversity of Denver) bolted right from the gun, flying through her first of four laps in 13:01, but Mariske Strauss (Mars Hill, N.C./Mars Hill College) was just 16 seconds behind. Strauss and Gross dueled throughout the race. Heading into the last lap, Gross held a narrow nine-second advantage. Strauss swapped a muddy bike for a "squeaky clean" two wheeler to chase Gross down. The swap worked as Strauss traversed the course in 11:21, which was 22 seconds faster than Gross to prevail with an overall time of 47:22, 13 seconds faster than Gross.




"At the tape zone she (Gross) wiped out and I took the gap and just put the hammer down from there," Strauss said. "So it was quite a nice cat and mouse game going on. It was well done. It was a great race and a great track out there today."




Masters




For the second-consecutive day, the masters riders opened and closed the day's racing. The first competition of the day was the men 45-49, who tangled with the 2.1-mile course left frozen by plummeting temperatures and an overnight freeze.




The rigid ruts throughout the course were no match for 1996 Olympian Don Myrah (San Jose, Calif.), who competed in the Olympic debut of discipline of mountain biking in Atlanta. Myrah bested the 64-rider field with a time of 49:10. Jon Cariveau (Steamboat Springs, Colo./MOOTS) hung with Myrah though the first three of the five-lap race, but a dropped chain on the penultimate lap cost him valuable time. Myrah secured the seventh national title of his career while Cariveau, who finished 58 seconds back, earned the silver ahead of bronze medalist James Coats (Campbell, Calif./California Giant Cycling).




"This is exactly what I thought it would be," Myrah said of the course. "After last night when it was all loose I knew it would freeze up hard this morning. It was a matter of picking really clean lines, which there aren't that many. Just whatever I could find."




The second race pitted 81 of the nation's best men 40-44 against each other. After the first of the five laps, Adam Myerson (Dorchester, Mass./Mock Orange Bike-SmartStop), Brandon Dwight (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport) andPete Webber (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport) were off the front opened a large gap on the field. The two Boulder Cycle Sport teammates worked together to leave Myerson 30 seconds behind as they completed their second circuit and 47 seconds back after their third. On the second-to-last lap, Dwight opened a seven-second cushion on Webber and a 90-second advantage on Myerson before riding solo to victory.




"I tried to be conservative where you could go down pretty easily and just tried to push hard where it was safe," Dwight said. "Even up to the last lap I almost caught a rut and almost went right into the barrier. So you really had to stay focused through whole race."




The evening's masters races had a distinct New England flavor to them with both winners residing in that region.




In the men's 35-39 contest, Brian Wilichoski (Danvers, N.H./Cyclocrossworld) rode away with the Stars-and-Stripes, but not without some anxious moments. On the last of the five-lap competition, Wilichoski pulled his foot out of the pedal, but accidentally hit the brake pad, knocking it into his spokes. Wilichoski dismounted, pulled the brake pad out and rode to the finish line. Christopher Case (Golden, Colo./Feedback Sports Racing) and Scott Frederick (Raleigh, N.C./Inland-Back to Dirt) locked horns in a battle for the silver and bronze medals. Case crossed the finish line just two seconds ahead of Frederick to earn second place, while Frederick secured the bronze. Weston Schempf (Rockville, Md./Charm City Cycling LLC), who had to forego an early lead due to a mechanical problem, rallied to finish fifth.




"I could see them," Wilichoski said of Case and Frederick. "I had a good gap like two laps in then I started fading a little bit and I started making mistakes and I’m looking back and they are closing and my eyes are blowing out of my head. It was everything I had to keep it together."




Dylan McNicholas (Stratham, N.H./Cyclocrossworld-Cannondale Cyclocrossworld) rode away with the men's 30-34 race to cap the day's racing. McNicholas opened a 30-second lead after the first lap. As the sun set during the race allowing the ground to harden slightly, McNicholas flew through his second lap in 8:56 before finishing his third circuit in only 9:01 to help him win the first national championship of his career. With the top step of the podium decided, a three-rider bunch fought for second, third and fourth. Matthew Pacocha (Boulder, Colo./BikeRadar.com), Robert Marion (Mount Airy, N.C./American Classic Pro Team) and Jake Wells (Avon, Colo./Stan's NoTubes) offered no quarter in their battle. Pacocha attacked the group late to secure the silver medal. Marion saved his best lap for last to edge Wells by four seconds to earn the bronze medal.




"I made my way through traffic, I started at the back. Made contact with the leaders on the first lap over the top of the hill. I went over the top a bit faster and that's where I got my gap. And just tried to grow it."

The event culminates Sunday with the Collegiate Division I and II men's races and the men's and women's elite competitions.

Ten crowned on third day of cyclo-cross national championships





Verona, Wisc. (Jan. 6, 2012) -- The 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships on Friday crowned 10 more national champions on the third day of competition. Approximately 150 junior and 100 masters competitors contested the muddy 2.1-mile course in unseasonably warm temperatures in Badger Prairie Park outside Madison, Wisc.





The day's racing opened and closed with the country's best 30-and-overs squaring off, with junior competition between riders age 10-18 filling the mild day in between.





Masters





In the morning's first race, Stephen Tilford (Topeka, Kansas) bested the 46-rider masters men 50-54 field to earn the Stars-and-Stripes. On the third of the four-lap competition, Tilford and his closest chaser, Kevin Hines (East Wareham, Mass./Corner Cycle Cycling Club), opened a gap approaching three minutes on the third-place rider. Hines trailed Tilford by 21 seconds as they heard the bell for their last lap. In the end, Tilford crossed 10 seconds ahead of a hard-charging Hines.





In the afternoon, Andrea Smith (Somerville, Mass./Minuteman Road Club-LadiesFirst Racing), who sits in fourth in theUnited States International Cyclo-cross elite women's standings heading to Sunday's finale, held off Kari Studley(Bothell, Wash./Team Redline), the winner of Wednesday's B race, early in the race and a surging Crystal Anthony(Beverly, Mass.) late in the contest to earn the gold medal. Anthony was 11 seconds faster than Nicole Thiemann(Philadelphia, Pa./Team CF-Elite) to win the silver.





"I heard she (Anthony) moved into second and I can't count her out," Smith said. "So I just tried to ride steady, consistent and keep the pedals moving and keep it upright otherwise she would pass me."





The day's racing closed with the women 35-39 race, Sally Annis (Nashua, N.H./CrossResults.com) sprinted to an early lead before riding away with the coveted Stars-and-Stripes. On her first lap, Annis traversed the muddy course nearly 30 seconds faster than any other rider before turning her second of four circuits 45 seconds faster any competitor en route to winning the race by nearly two minutes.





"It was messy, so having bike that functioned and getting traction was key," Annis said. "You can never let up in 'cross. You never know what's going to happen. You can roll a tire. You could crash. You could break a chain. At one point, I had some chain stuck, so I had to stop and do a little maintenance. You never know. You always have to stay on the gas."





Juniors





The women 13-14 competed in the second race of the day. Mina Anderberg (Louisville, Colo./Sports T.E.A.M.-T.E.A.M. Fuji) rode away with the third national title of her career by outlasting Wisconsin-native and multi-time national champ on the road Skylar Schneider (West Allis, Wisc.). Anderberg was able to open a gap on Schneider by riding up a run-up.





"It went awesome, I did exactly what I wanted," Anderberg said. "It was perfect conditions for me, I love the mud, and it was just really good."





In the women 10-12 race, 11-year-old Sydney Lach (Cincinnati, Ohio/Queen City Wheels-Lionhearts) credited a fast start to her winning the first national title of her career. Lach was over a minute faster than her closest competitor on the first lap and she completed her second lap two minutes faster than any other rider in her age group.





As the sun shone on the course and ground loosened further, the women 17-18 contested their three-lap race. Wisconsin-native Corrie Osborne (Mequon, Wisc./ISCorp Cycling Team) and Allison Arensman (Rutherford College, N.C./Fiets Maan Racing) turned in an opening lap 20 seconds faster than the next rider. Osborne's second lap opened a 26-second margin on Arensman before winning the race by 1:14 to secure the second national title of her career.





"My coach was building me up to this race so I'm at my peak right now." Osborne said. "So its really good."





The women 15-16 started just one minute after the women 17-18 group started. It took until the first climb of the first lap for Emma White (Delanson, N.Y./NYCross.com) to establish herself as the cream of the crop. She started passing riders in the 17-18 race by the first climb and crossed the line third with one lap remaining. Her strong start of her race allowed her to win by 31 seconds.





"I tend to have good starts, I feel strong in my starts," White said. "So I like to take advantage of them and see where I can go."





In the youngest men's age group, Andrew Schmidt (Lake Geneva, Wisc.) took the top prize finishing his two-lap contest in 24:04, 32 seconds faster than the silver-medalist, Scott Funston (Black Diamond, Wash./Old Town Bicycle).





Gage Hecht (Parker, Colo./International Christian Cycling Club) rode away with a win by 46 seconds in the men 13-14 race. Hecht's two lap times were within one second of each other, completing the first lap in 10:49 and the second in 10:50.





"It felt like I did everything just like I hoped it would go in practice. It felt like it should have." Hecht said.





In the day's last junior race, Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Ct./Team CF) turned in a stellar performance to win by 47 seconds. As the lone rider to keep each of his three laps under 11 minutes, Vincent led by 30 seconds after the first lap and did not relent, maintaining his advantage throughout the race.





"I've been working the whole season to get it," a visibly excited Vincent said. "I'm so happy."

The event continues Saturday with masters men 30-49, junior men 17-18 and collegiate women before culminating Sunday, Jan. 8 with the elite men's and women's races.

Linda Sone emerged victorious in a back and forth battle with Kimberly Flynn to win the women's 40-44 national title.
The 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships continued Thursday with the crowining of 12 masters national champions. Nearly 150 of the country's best 45-80 year-old cyclo-cross bike races tackled the course at Badger Prairie Park on an unseasonably warm January day in Wisconsin.

Organizers saved one of the day's best races for last as the men's 55-59, shaped up to be one of the most hotly contested. Paul Curley (Taunton, Mass./Mid State Cycling Club-Gear Works-Spin Arts Cyclery), Robert Downs (Madison, Wisc./Planet Bike) andNorman Kreiss (Orinda, Calif./California Giant Cycling) broke away on the first lap and never looked back, completing the first two laps in a blistering 21:40. As the trio completed the second of their four-lap contest, Curley attacked and didn't let up, taking the win by 26 seconds over Kreiss to collect the 25th national championship of his career.

 

"I rode from the front," said Curley. "Anytime I could push ahead, I pushed ahead. I wasn't afraid to lead. I even led into the wind, which is uncharacteristic. It just came together. It's what the season is supposed to do. Today was supposed to be the day and it worked out. Full power, good technical, no crashes, great pit crew."

In the afternoon's other premiere contest, Linda Sone (Northfield, Minn./Cycle-Smart) and Kimberly Flynn (Hixson, Tenn./Scenic City Velo) were the story of the women’s 40-44 race; duking it out throughout the four-lap affair. After the lead flip-flopped several times, Sone, who is a firefighter in Minnesota, finally took the lead for good on the final lap as she began running the technical sand and mud sections.

The day began at 9:30 a.m. with the men's 60-64 race. Approximately halfway through the race, Fred Wittwer (Charlottesville, Va./Alan North America Cycling) pulled away from the leaders. At first, Joseph Brown (Walled Lake, Mich./Flying Rhino Cycling Club) was chasing him, but Brown was overtaken by Gregory Pausch (Chippewa Falls, Wisc./Planet Bike), who placed second, 16 seconds behind Wittwer and 24 seconds ahead of Brown, who earned the bronze.

The men's 65-69 contest was won by Lewis Rollins (Salt Lake City, Utah/The Contender Club). Rollins, who employed a healthier diet to lose 12 pounds heading into the event, collected the second national title of his career today.

 

"This year was a little different than other years. I've only raced twice before nationals," Rollins said. "This course suits me. It's not a technical as I'd like, but it has just enough climbs that are slippery and muddy, downhills that are muddy. If you can bike handle and not fall down, you'll make more time than guys who go fast, fall down, get up, go fast, fall down. I don't know that I'm a steady Eddie kind of guy, but that's just the way it was."

Robert Llamas (Montrose, Calif./Montrose Cycling Club), who played basketball recreationally for about 35 years, won the men's 70-74 race. After nearly rising to the top step several times earlier in his cycling career, the semi-retired psychologist won the Stars-and-Stripes jersey.

"Yes, it does mean something," Llamas said. "It's the jersey."

After winning the men's 80-and-over race on Thursday, Walter Axthlem (Durango, Colo./Durango Wheel Club) has entered the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships five times and has earned the gold medal each of those five times. He also earned national titles in the criterium and time trial at the 2011 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships.

"It is a really challenging course for me," Axthelm said. "I’m really glad there wasn’t snow because it would have been a dandy in the snow. Couldn’t ask for better conditions in this part of the world.”

In the first women's race of the day, Kathy Sarvary (Manchester, N.H./Blue Steel Cyclery) got the hole shot at the start of the race and rode away with the women's 55-59 national championship. Diane Ostenso (Cottage Grove, Wisc./Trek Midwest Team) mounted a late charge, but Sarvary won by 24 seconds.

Next up was the women's 60-64 competition where the powerful Tove Shere (Santa Fe, N.M./KHSNM.com-Thenationalsproject.com) took the lead from the gun and was able to hold off multi-time national champion Martha Iverson (Durango, Colo./Durango Wheel Club) to earn her first Stars-and-Stripes in cyclo-cross.

“I took the big ring right from the gun," Shere explained. "I risked a lot on the descents in order to get a lead pretty quickly. It could have been a whole new ball game if it were snowing or frozen, but I had some luck and I had great support from the New Mexico fans all over the course yelling and screaming.”

Julie O'Neill (Bennett, Neb.) earned the Stars-and-Stripes jersey for women 65-69 after traversing the 2.1-mile course four times in 56:27.

Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./Northeast Bicycle Club), who broke her pelvis and shoulder in a training accident in August, won the women's 70-and-over race to collect her sixth cyclo-cross national title today.

"I tried to chase down anyone who tried to pass me of the 55s," Lockhart said. "There was one person that I was determined to stay away from. It was a good race, very nice course. I like it a lot."

As the ground thawed later in the morning, the women's 45-49 race took the course. It didn't take long for the leader to find her way to the front of the pack. Gina Hall (Orinda, Calif./California Giant Cycling), who earned the second national title of her career today, quickly made it obvious she was the rider to beat. Hall broke away early in the race and didn't yield, as she won by 47 seconds.

"I just tried to be patient and move to the front," Hall said. "I think I got to the front close to the climb on the first lap. I decided at that point to attack and put some time between me and the group. I knew there were some fast women in there. I was concerned about trying to battle them throughout the race, especially on the slippery descents. It's so easy to fall. That's where I got my gap. I just tried to hold it. Someone was closing down on me for a while, but somehow I held them off."

In the women's 50-54 competition, the action came late in the race. Kris Walker (Pocatello, Idaho/The Contender Club) built a lead approaching 15 seconds heading into the last of the four-lap affair. Approximately midway through the last lap, Walker heard cheers forCatherine Walberg (Topeka, Kansas). Much to Walker's surprise, Walberg had made up the gap and was close to passing Walker. Walker stepped on the gas and sprinted to the finish line, holding off Walberg by only four seconds.

"They're all really special to me," Walker said. "The first one was just awesome because it was my first. Today's is also special because Catherine is really on her game. To beat her is really special because she is a tough, tough competitor."

With intense wind and freezing, muddy course conditions, Sunday’s UCI Men’s Pro Race played out much differently than Saturday’s event, but the end result was the same. Trebon (LTS/Felt) took the podium’s top step, followed by Rahpa-Focus teammates Jeremy Powers and Chris Jones. In the women’s race, Sue Butler (River City Bicycles/Ridley) fought snow and gusting winds to record her first victory of the 2011-12 season. Hosted by the Chicago Cyclocross Cup, the New Year’s Resolution was the area’s first-ever UCI cyclocross event. Many of the competitors will be traveling directly to Madison, Wis., prior to next weekend’s USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships.

The men’s field was greeted by deteriorating conditions and a course buffeted by wind gusts of 20-30 mph. The race pits were chaotic as mechanics dealt with frozen components and parts breaking due to the heavy mud. Unlike Saturday, when Trebon attacked midway through the race and rode solo to the win, Powers and Trebon traded attacks until the final straightaway. “They should put up a sign that says ‘Ryan Trebon Park’,” said Powers. “This is a perfect event for him. He’s got a lot of power and he can just throw it down.”

Trebon had been away from competition for over six weeks prior to arriving in Chicagoland and picking up the dual victories. His reappearance in top form will add another dimension to the National Championship picture. Powers won the 2011 US Grand Prix of Cyclocross series, but Trebon is also enjoying one of the best seasons of his career.

“I'm just happy to be back racing. It’s been a lot of training, traveling and trying to get ready, thinking about racing Nationals and getting ready for Europe,” said Trebon. “I feel good for next weekend, but there are a lot of fast guys coming. Jeremy is going to get strong to get stronger next weekend as well.”

In the women’s pro event, Butler won the sprint off the line and settled into a lead group before pulling away in the last third of the race. Saturday winner Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles) was the early protagonist, with Crystal Anthony (Ladies First) and Nicole Thiemann (CF Elite) taking turns in the lead group. Butler’s smooth riding style prevailed, however, as the Portland, Ore., rider carried more speed through the course’s various sand traps and muddy portions.

“I was riding through things that people were running, and I would ride to things a little bit closer because every time I just rode a little bit more than someone else I would catch people,” said Butler. “When I got around someone, I punched it.”

Butler picked up her first win since 2010 and will head towards the National Championship on a high note. She was joined on the podium by Annis and Anthony.

The 2012 USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships will be held at Badger Prairie Park in Verona, Wis. The Women’s Elite/u23 Championship will be decided on Sunday, January 8 at Noon, CT, while the men’s event will take place at 2:15 PM CT.

CHICAGO – Any questions about the health of Ryan Trebon (LTS/Felt) were answered during the opening meters of Saturday’s New Year’s Resolution men’s elite race, held Saturday on a thick and muddy course under frigid, overcast skies. Trebon jumped from the gun and was never challenged en route to the win. It is a confidence-inspiring performance for the Bend, Ore., rider as he returns from a six-week layoff forced by a left-leg injury. The women’s race was won at the starting gun as well, when Sally Annis (crossresults.com/JRA Cycles) took the hole shot and proceeded to fend off all challengers. The inaugural New Year’s Resolution is being held at Indian Lakes Country Club in Bloomingdale, Ill., a near-west suburb of Chicago. The event, hosted by the Chicago Cyclocross Cup, will continue with a full schedule of races tomorrow, January 1.

Pre-race favorite Jeremy Powers, fresh off a series victory in the US Grand Prix of Cyclocross, finished second and teammate Chris Jones rolled in third to give Rapha Focus two riders on the men’s podium. The flat, windy course at Indian Lakes suited Trebon’s powerful riding style, but his nearly two-minute margin of victory over Powers will command attention with just a week left until the 2012 USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships.

“I didn’t really want to ride that last five laps by myself, but it was a hard course and I just seemed to have a little bit more when I was sitting down and smashing through everything,” said Trebon. “I actually really like this kind of course. It’s just a slog the whole way around, it’s like a tractor pull. For me, that’s fun.”

Trebon struck out on his own with over half the race remaining and recorded the fastest laps of the day while riding solo. As Trebon was finding his legs, Powers and Jones had their hands full with Sheboygan, Wis., native Brian Matter (Gear Grinder), who would eventually finish fourth.  

“I think [Trebon] is feeling fresh and he’s got a lot to prove right now, having been off the bike with his injury,” said Powers. “It was a little disappointing for me to just not have enough power in the legs to go with him when he went.”

Annis, from Nashua, N.H., never had company en route to her victory over the women’s elite field. Likewise, Andrea Smith (Ladies First) rode to second in solitude. The race for third, however, wasn’t settled until the final lap with Susan Butler (River City Bicycles/Ridley) holding off Nicole Thiemann (Team CF-Elite).

“I was just focused on riding clean and riding strong,” said Annis. “If people could catch me, good for them, they’d be riding stronger and cleaner than I am. I was just focusing on my own race and didn’t pay too much attention to what was going on behind me.”  

Sunday’s UCI Elite Women will go off at 12:30 PM and the UCI Elite Men will begin at 1:30 PM CT.

Ryan Trebon (Men's 1st) on returning from injury: "You never want to get injured and have to take a break. I got injured at a point when I was feeling good, when my fitness was really good. Sometimes that better than taking a break when you're completely burned out... I'm glad I was able to start riding as soon as I was. Things progressed and I had a lot of help getting back. The pedigree of the men’s elite field is unprecedented in the Chicago area and includes Jeremy Powers, the 2011 Exergy U.S. Grand Prix of Cyclocross overall series winner and the 2011 Velo magazine North American Cyclocross Rider of the Year, and Ryan Trebon, a four-time national champion in cyclocross and mountain bike. The UCI 2.0 event is hosted by the Chicago Cyclocross Cup.

 

"A field of this quality is fantastic for New Year's Resolution's inaugural year, especially when competing against more established European races," said Race Director Jason Knauff. "This lineup will provide a test for the elite riders heading into Nationals, as well as an exciting race-day experience for our spectators and amateur competitors."



 

Powers (Team Rapha-Focus) will use New Year’s Resolution as a bridge between his USGP series-winning form and the 2012 USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships, slated for Jan. 8 in Madison, Wis. Since 2009, the Connecticut native has recorded over 20 cyclocross victories. making him a favorite in Madison. Powers will be joined this weekend by Rapha-Focus teammate Chris Jones, who picked up a pair of second-place finishes in a November swing through the Midwest.

 

New Year’s Resolution is a critical measuring stick for Trebon (LTS/Felt), who returns to competition for the first time after injuring his left knee in a pre-race crash in Louisville, Ky., on November 13. Trebon was enjoying a strong campaign before the setback, as evidenced by his third-place USGP overall finish despite being sidelined for the final two races. A positive result in Chicago could serve as a springboard for Trebon, who will have National and World Championship ambitions as he navigates the course at Indian Lakes.

1. I built a garage. Using past tense is a stretch here because it’s not exactly “done” yet but at least it’s a glorified shed with a sweet paint job and lights that (mostly) work.  My Dad came out for a while and we puttered away on the details, letting the professionals handle some of the major things, like Framing and Roof.  Eric Meglassen from Pique Architecture did a good job with design and sub-contractor wrangling as well...  It was nice to wake up in the morning and roll out back with Harvey to solve problems and make progress.  That said, it will also be nice to no longer be working construction from dawn till dusk…

Houseguests.  Dad opened and Mom closed a solid month of visitors to Portland Avenue.  It’s great to have time in the fall to catch up with folks from out of town and show them a good time in Bend.  Easy crowd to please and good catalyst to do the things you don’t normally do at home.  Like go to the dirt jumps, or the Symphony.

3. No Cyclocross.  Other than a hilarious Halloween weekend in Bend.  As much as I’ve always struggled to accept cyclist’s claims of being “burnt out” at the end of a season, I was pretty over toeing the line after a challenging summer.  Thus, it was nice to catch up on life this fall, stoking the fire for next year.

5. Um, the GRAND CANYON!  Yup, took two weeks and floated down the Colorado River for 280 miles of spectacular scenery, hiking, camping and general pleasant existence.  Perfect weather, a great group of old and new friends and high water made this sort of an amazing trip.  Thanks for the invite, Lana, glad I ran into you and made it happen.  Some solid introspection has time to happen whilst floating between towering sandstone walls and looking at the stars from your bivvy sack.

 

6. Bike Testing.  We’re working on some pretty sweet new stuff over here at Giant Bicycles.  2012 was the year of the road bike and I can assure you that 2013 will be the year of the MTB.  Sounds like a good year to me…

8. Europe without a bike.  My fantasy of traveling to Europe and not racing was fulfilled for Rabobank Team Presentation in Holland.  This left time for a couple evenings checking out downtown Amsterdam around the team event at Rabo Intergalactic HQ before popping down to the Alps for a short, solo ski holiday.  Which worked out so, so amazingly well.  Fresh show just in time, friends of friends introducing me to ever more great people in Verbier and Chamonix and a surprise MTB ride in the valley with the folks from Bike Verbier.  I might retire and become a guide on their lifetime supply of singletrack…

9. Planning.   2012 is shaping up to be a great year.  I’m going somewhere warm for the bulk of the winter to train my face off, hopefully without crashing it off following Ross Schnell (preferred shred buddy) around Sedona, AZ’s fabled trails. Then nine weeks across the pond will be spruced up with the Cape Epic in South Africa after World Cup #1 and enhanced by the last seven taking place at some TBD sweet location for the remainder of European Springtime (Verbier? Fribourg?).  At the conclusion of World Cup #4 in late May I’ll know if I’ve earned my spot on the US Olympic Team for London and can commence preparing to ride like myself at The Games.  Either way, the season will wind down at Trans-Provence, with a week of racing through Southern France from Gap to Monaco, but only on the downhills, it might just be the best event I’ll ever do…

10. Motivation.  Not racing or being involved in competition for the last few months has refreshed my brain and body, and let me catch up on all the other things in life enough to be stoked to step off the plane in Redmond this evening and get down to business. This is about six weeks before I normally start and should pay dividends considering the schedule.  It’s going to be so sweet to be super fast all season!  Between getting off the plane and a sweet bike ride tomorrow there will have to be a stop at Deschutes for a local’s burger though.  With salad and gluten-free bun of course…

With six bids under consideration, USA Cycling evaluated potential host cities using various criteria, including: accessibility, community support, course options, technical expertise and the organization’s commitment to volunteer recruitment, marketing and lodging.
 
USA Cycling will conduct site visits before making the final determination. The strength of each bid will be re-examined after reviewing the proposed course, venue location and available facilities. Additionally, USA Cycling will meet with the local convention and visitors bureau and sports commission staff.
 
“We are extremely excited about the quality and depth of the bids we received for this event,” National Events Director Kelli Lusk said. “All of the cities offered spectacular presentations. We’re confident that any of these three cities would make a great host for this event in 2014 and 2015.”

The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Durango Devo Sweet Elite was formed in 2011 with a goal of promoting and supporting riders age 17-25 that are prepared to move to the next level of race competition.  The Team focuses on providing riders coaching, management, equipment, and funding to travel and compete at a Regional and National level.  The Sweet Elite is an extension of the highly successful Durango Devo Youth Cycling Program that provides riders age 5-19 structured after school riding programs with an emphasis on creating life long cyclists.

UCI CXLA Weekend: DTLA Historic CX Day 2

“Miller Doubles up and Berden Rides Away”

Day two of the Southern California (SoCal) UCI weekend, part of the premier California Gold Crown Events presented by Shimano, presented another fantastic sunny day of events.  The elite races had a change of cultural flavor today as the race promoter brought in a Mariachi band to share the local flavor of nearby Olevera Street. The guitar, trumpets, and violins rocked as riders floored it down the starting straight and through many other parts of the crowd filled in-field.

The course with its minor tweaks for day two again made for strategic racing as the long straights and tricky turns brought more exciting action. The start was again the same with a long fast straight, into a challenging loose left and an immediate right. The riders came through the twisting front section, minus a few turns, and opened up again on the back straight. With a few less turns and chances for errors the straights seemed like the area for riders to hit it even harder on day two so the stronger racers could break away. Again, it was a numbers game but only the strong survived in the end.

Elite Women:

Sue Butler (River City Bicycles) grabbed the holeshot for the second day, then Julie Krazniak (Rapha-Focus) came around to take control on the first lap. The front of the race broke into four riders quickly as some riders were eager to make up for mishaps on day one. The Second lap Nicole Duke (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com) and the previous days winner Meredith Miller (Cal Giant/Specialized) gained some ground on the others but it was still early.





The group was soon back together and continued to increase their gap on the field. Miller was riding smart and stayed in the group as Duke, Butler, and Krazniak again made their efforts to pull away. Then with two to go Miller attacked and Butler went with her. The two were close together then with one to go Miller gained ground on Butler. She was working hard and soloed in for her second win of the weekend. Butler stayed ahead of Duke for second and Krazniak rolled in a few seconds behind Duke for fourth. 

The women chasing behind were working hard all day. In the end it was Devon Gorry (Team Rambuski Law) who rode off the group to roll in for fifth and the final podium position.




Elite Men:

Ben Berden (Ops Ale-Stoemper) took the holeshot and a big group of 13 or 14 riders that stayed together through lap one but by the end of lap two the front separated into two groups of five. Steve Fischer (Revel Consulting/Rad Racing) was on the front leading Tim Johnson (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com), Berden and others. The second group, much like day one, was Cody Kaiser (Cal Giant/Specialized) driving the pace with Allen Krughoff (Boulder Cycle Sport) and the rest in tow.





The groups held their ground and changed with riders on the front. Fischer eventually dropped back to the second group as Berden, Johnson, Chris Jones (Rapha-Focus) and Chris Sheppard (Rocky Moutain/Shimano) stayed together. With 5 to Berden started to make his move, it was an epic effort and early in the race. By the start finish stretch he had already opened a small gap on the group. Jones, Johnson, and Sheppard came through but no one wanted to respond. Behind Kaiser kept driving the pace, but the group never got back on the front chasers.




With two to go Berden had increased his lead. Shepperd was drilling it to get back up while Jones and Johnson stayed close. With one lap to go Johnson and Jones made their moves but never got back to Berden who soloed in for the win. Johnson was able to hold off Jones for second and Shepperd rolled in fourth. Kaiser who was strong all day, put in more late efforts to finish just ahead of his group for the final podium spot and the top U23 positon. 
 


It was a great weekend of UCI racing in sunny downtown Los Angeles. A great example of the growth of the sport of cyclocross west and the great things promoter Dorothy Wong is sharing with the national and local cross scenes. The series has a lot more to come as it heads to Bakersfield next week, home to the big Northern California vs. Southern California showdown for bragging rights event at the end of January.

The season’s battles for the Shimano Series has been hard fought for both the men and women. Heading into the final day, Laura Van Gilder (C3 p/b Mellow Mushroom) and Luke Keough (Champion System p/b Keough Cyclocross) had built up sizable leads, but both being the competitors they are, wanted to honor the jersey with victory in the final day.

Today’s second daty of racing at the NBX Gran Prix of Cross was a bit more technically demanding than Saturday’s, with tight and loose corners on the upper woods section and a second sand section, ending in a steep runup. The hurdles had been moved from a flat approach to an uphill and caused problems for racers throughout the day.

 

Elite Women

In a move uncharacteristic of Elite Women’s racing, the first half of the race saw an extremely large group on the front of thirteen riders. Yesterday’s victor, Andrea Smith (LadiesFirst Racing) was patrolling the front, joined by Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles), Laura Van Gilder and Maureen Bruno Roy (Bob’s Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles). The demands of the course, as usual, created a selection late in the race, reducing the front group to five with only a lap and a half remaining. Smith, Bruno Roy, Annis, Van Gilder and Smith’s teammate Crystal Anthony had made the lead, but unlike yesterday, it seemed like there were no team tactics to be found. The high pace kept all riders under pressure, continually creating small gaps which each burned matches to close. Bruno Roy began to stretch off the back on the final lap and, as the group entered the sand with little more than half a lap remaining, Anthony also started to lose the pace. On the exit from the sand, Smith was the first wheel and Van Gilder slipped on a tight, rooted corner and hit the ground. This was Smith’s opportunity and she seized it with both hands, building a lead of ten bike lengths in an instant. Van Gilder turned herself inside out to close the gap but was unable to make contact. Smith was able to raise her hands alone in victory. Behind, Van Gilder was unable to match an acceleration by Annis on the pavement and came across the line third.

Van Gilder’s third place today was enough to hold on for the Shimano Series victory. “I’m so happy to have won this,” said Van Gilder, who races on Dura-Ace. “Shimano has done so much and the Series is such a fantastic event. I wanted to support it and am so proud of winning.” By virtue of her great weekend of racing, Andrea Smith was able to pick up second overall in the Shimano Series, which boasts a $10,000 prize purse split evenly between the men and women. Sally Annis’s third overall was a fantastic result for the young crossresults.com team.

 

Elite Men

Coming off Luke Keough’s surprise victory yesterday, the Cannondale/cyclocrossworld.com duo of Jamey Driscoll and Christian Heule came into the final day of the Shimano Series looking for revenge. Knowing that the crafty racer from Cape Cod packs a world-class sprint, coupled with his ability to maintain himself in difficulty, the two knew they would have to isolate Keough.

The early group was extremely large and, following Adam Myerson (SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley) driving the pace into the sand pit, the pace was taken over by Texan Bryan Fawley (Orbea USA), who came to NBX looking for his first taste of cyclocross in New England. Last year’s winner, Nick Keough, followed by his teammate and brother Luke, then headed the group of fifteen. At six laps to go, Driscoll, Keough and Heule found themselves off the front, in a repeat of yesterday’s racing, ahead of a driving group led by Jerome Townsend (SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley) and Dylan McNicholas (cyclocrossworld.com).  McNicholas bridged up, only to attack immediately.

At five to go, with McNicholas back in, Heule attacked. Keough attempted to cover, but was left dangling and returned to the group. The next move came when Heule was up to ten seconds and Driscoll took a dig. Keough attempted to cover this move as well, but went down hard in a soft corner. Driscoll was then clear to reach his teammate at the front.

With Driscoll and Heule working at the front, the chase behind was left with McNicholas, Keough, Justin Lindine (bikereg.com/Joe’s Garage) and Mike Garrigan (Lapierre Canada). Garrigan, who is best known for his blisteringly fast first two laps, had remained within himself and launched an attack inside three to go. The Canadian’s attack didn’t amount to much and McNicholas began to pull the chase as the leaders got the bell. The high pace put Garrigan into difficulty and Lindine misjudged a corner, hit the ground and got up with a mechanical problem with his bike.

The leaders hit the pavement together with Heule able to hold off a charging Driscoll for his second Shimano Series victory of the season. Twenty seconds behind, elbows were wide in the battle for third between McNicholas and Keough, with Keough pulling off another impressive sprint, leaving McNicholas fourth, with Garrigan fifth and Lindine sixth.

Thanks to his impressive weekend of racing, Luke Keough was able to pull on the final Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series leader’s jersey and payout for both the Elite and the U23 competition. A great weekend’s racing for Heule meant the Swiss Champion moved into second overall with Justin Lindine, the one-time series leader third. On his win, Keough was quick to point out the advantage of racing regionally. “It’s a great series. I’ve grown up with the Verge Series and to see the new Shimano sponsorship means great things for New England racing.” Heule echoed Keough’s response, pointing to the quality of courses and ease of travel as reasons the Shimano Series should be a priority for elite racers.

 

The 2011 Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series presented by Verge has come to a close. UCI CXLA Weekend: DTLA Historic CX

The second round of UCI weekends in Southern California (SoCal) is part of the premier California Gold Crown Events presented by Shimano.  The elite races started to the beat of the Dragon Dance as group from Chinatown came to share its rich history. The park is immediately adjacent to Chinatown, the Metro Gold line, and a short walk from Dodgers Stadium and Olivera Street. The location hosted the first race of the SoCal season and was a good spot to for promoter Dorothy Wong to hold her second UCI weekend this year. The park has a great backdrop of downtown and as Dr. Leonard Pitt said, “No other available 32 acres holds as much opportunity to enlighten us about history and culture of Los Angeles and this region.”  

The course made for some strategic racing as the long straights led into slow, loose, and tricky turns that made the racing exciting. From the start riders began through long fast straight, into a challenging loose left and into an immediate right. Once riders came through the twisting front section they opened up again on the back straight. Each of these long straights really picked the pace up each lap, grouping riders together. It was a strength in numbers game all day as the gusty winds swept across the granulated sections. The flyover and fast right hand banked turn were a definite favorite of riders all day.

It was Sue Butler (River City Bicycles) who took the holeshot and through the first part of the course but by the first technical section Julie Krasniak (Rapha-Focus) came around to lead with Nicole Duke (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com). Meredith Miller, who had a great weekend last week at Jingle Cross, sat comfortably fourth wheel. 


On the first lap Duke flatted far out from the pits and was slowing off the lead group. She made an exchange and got back out on course but a second flat put her out of the race. The front three kept driving hard and increasing their gap on the field. The chase broke into two and by the end it was Devon Gorry (Rambuski Law) and Katherine Sherwin (Stan’s NoTubes) who sprinted it out. SoCal series leader Allison Mann (Rock N’ Road) had a great ride and rolled in for sixth. Gorry beat Sherwin to the line to take fourth.

The battle up front was going back and forth and with two to go it looked like it was going to be either Butler or Miller. By the last lap it was clear Miller was in control as she rode ahead of Butler to take the win. Krasniak rolled in for third.

Elite Men:

The first lap held a big group together and it was Cody Kaiser (California Giant/Specialized) who took the holeshot but early into the lap Allen Krughoff (Boulder Cycle Sport) took the lead. By the second lap more riders started working the front and the accelerations of the group eventually started taking the numbers down in the ten-man group.




Eventually, the front group split as Tim Johnson (Cannnondale/Cyclocrossworld.com) pressed the pace. There was some indecision in riders as to who would continue the pace between Bend Berden (Opes Ale-Stoemper), Krughoff, and Johnson.  The hesitation allowed Chris Jones (Rapha-Focus) and Chris Sheppard (Rocky Mountain) to close the small gap that opened. But Shepperd once back, started to attack back and forth with Johnson increasing the gap back to the group led by the Cal Giant rider Kaiser. 


With two laps to go Johnson put in a big attack on the far back stretch of the course that left Krughoff and Shepperd to chase. With one to go Shepperd continued to chase hard but rolled in comfortably for fourth as Krughoff flatted and had to change bikes to take the final podium spot in fifth. Up front Johnson went early and ran away with it for the win with Berden second and Jones third.






Day two will be another exciting day of UCI racing in downtown Los Angeles as the course will see some minor tweaks.  It seems as if old man winter has taken the weekend off to allow these cyclcross hero’s another bluebird day in SoCal.

Perfect weather, with light breezes and temperatures in the high-40s and clear skies were over Goddard Park in Warwick, Rhode Island for the NBX Gran Prix of Cross. Today’s racing was riveting and some of the biggest crowds in New England were on hand to see it.

The course offered its usual top-level challenge, with a steep ride up, long sections of deceivingly tricky woods, sand run on Narragansett Bay and an extremely fast, downhill finish. This racecourse has all the features that we think of when we want to define proper cyclocross, and the best names in the sport came out in force.

 

Elite Women

This season’s racing in New England has seen a battle pitted between Laura Van Gilder (C3 p/b Mellow Mushroom), Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles) and the trio from LadiesFirst Racing, Andrea Smith, Crystal Anthony and Elle Anderson. Van Gilder has been dominant this season and holds a sizable lead in the Shimano Series coming into the final weekend. She picked up a pair of victories last week at Bay State Cross and hoped to do the same at NBX. Annis and the women of LadiesFirst had other plans. Maureen Bruno Roy (Bob’s Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles) took the holeshot and was the first out of the sand, driving the initial group of eight women. The pace was taken over and lifted by Van Gilder and the selection was made quickly. At the front, it was Van Gilder, Annis, Anthony, Anderson and Smith. For the first time this season, the women of LadiesFirst worked coherently as a group to put Annis and Van Gilder under pressure. First, it was Anderson launching an attack, which was closed by Van Gilder, then Anthony went, putting the pressure on Annis. Smith was, all the time, sitting safely in the group, clearly biding her time. As the race went on, Anderson launched a final attack and, once reeled in, fell off the back of the group. With the group reduced to four, it was Anthony’s turn to take off. Her attack came very late in the game, with little more than half a lap to go, and put Van Gilder and Annis under pressure once again. When Anthony was reeled in, Van Gilder stayed on the front, hoping to undo her luck from last year by leading out the sprint. Van Gilder was the first to the pavement, but Smith came in hard and shot through, outfoxing Van Gilder and picking up a great victory. Van Gilder held off Annis for second with Anthony ahead of Anderson for fourth.

 




Elite Men

The Elite Men’s field was absolutely star-studded with six-time Swiss National Champion Christian Heule and his Cannondale/cyclocrossworld.com teammate Jamey Driscoll joining the pinnacle of New England racing. The Series leader, Luke Keough (Champion System p/b Keough Cyclocross) came back to defend his jersey following the World Cup in Koksijde, holding a slim lead over Justin Lindine (bikereg.com/Joe’s Garage).

The racing was furious from the gun, with Dylan McNicholas (cyclocrossworld.com) taking the holeshot and leading the field into the sand. For the first few laps, despite the intense pace, the front group contained twelve racers with leadership switching between McNicholas, Mike Garrigan (Lapierre Canada), Shawn Milne (ECV/Mazda) and the duo from Cannondale/cyclocrossworld.com. Notably, Keough, while rarely on the front, was never behind third wheel and was quick to cover all moves.


The clip slowly began to shed racers as Driscoll turned on his big diesel engine. The group was eventually trimmed to seven with Driscoll at the front, followed by Heule, Keough, McNicholas, Lindine and SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley teammates Jerome Townsend and Adam Myerson. While Myerson, McNicholas and Lindine each were put into difficulty, each demonstrated their grit and determination by coming back to the lead. A split came with four to go as Heule, Driscoll and Keough went off the front, forcing the group of four to chase. At two to go, thanks to some chess playing at the front, the gap had come down and it came back together. With seven racers evenly matched together, this looked likely to come to a sprint. On the final half of a lap, Heule attacked out of the sandpit and Keough dug incredibly deep to stay with him. McNicholas, slightly gapped, turned himself inside out and made contact with Driscoll behind him.

On the final 180-degree turn onto the pavement, Heule was at the front with Driscoll second and looked ready to pick up his second Shimano Series victory of the season. Keough, dug deep into his reserves and uncorked one of the finest sprints we’ve seen all season and came around Heule for the most prestigious victory of his young career. Heule held on for second ahead of Driscoll. McNicholas came across the line fourth. Townsend picked up fifth ahead of Lindine with Myerson seventh.

 

With only one day of racing left in the Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series, we’re bound to see another race as exciting as today. Our series winners will be crowned on Sunday. He went on to race that afternoon finishing 10th and relinquishing his overall lead to that day's winner Jeremy Powers. Trebon has been MIA ever since. CyclingDirt caught up with Ryan to get the Dirt n what's up with Tre-BOOM!]


CyclingDirt: Tell us about the week following the Louisville USGP? The injury seemed to get worse over the next few days.

Ryan Trebon: I Left louisville and went down to FL to visit family.   My injury didn't get worse.   I just had a huge hematoma and there was a ton of bleeding so the swelling and bruising got more pronounced.    I was seeing a PT down there, but it just didn't seem to be getting any better after a week.    So I decided to head back home to Bend OR and work with the Dr. and PT that I regularly see and am extremely comfortable with and trust.     Working with people you know and honestly are looking out for your best interest and understand what you do for a living is an important thing.    I trust the guys at  Rebound Physical Therapy alot and know they will do whats best for me.









CD: You crashed during your pre-ride on Sunday. In the hours before the race it seemed unlikely you would start but you choose to ride through the pain to stay in contention for the USGP series overall [All 8 races count, no drops.] In hindsight, was that the right decision? 

RT: Honestly?   I don't know.    I don't think I helped out the injury much racing and probably did make it worse.   But if you're gonna be dumb you gotta be tough.   Maybe my decision was a little short sighted but at the time it didn't hurt that much, I could ride my bike reasonable well,  so why wouldn't I atleast try and race and see what happened?     The only thing I wish I could take back is that 5sec when I crashed,  but shit happens and you just try you're hardest to deal it and make the best out of any situation.

After the doctors visits, MRI's, etc. what is the diagnosis, treatment, and expected recovery time? What, if any, training can you do at this time?

So here's the situation.   Diagnosis now is tears in my quadricep,  VMO, and fascia tearing.     I've been getting as much work as possible done to help speed up the process, but unfortunately it is just gonna take time.    I have been riding, I wouldn't say I've been training but I can ride for 3+hrs.   It is just hard because you need to let the muscles heal and training on them constantly loading them is not the best way to do that.     We are trying to manage and balance the two as best as possible right now.   I'm hoping to be ready for Nationals in January.








How you holding up, mentally? With arguably the best 'cross form of your life, this couldn't have come at a worse time. Are there empty ice cream containers next to your bed? Watching lots of sad movies?

Its a good thing I don't like ice cream!    I'm doing fine,  Its incredibly frustrating and disapointing, not just for myself, but I really wanted to repay all our sponsors and supporters by winning races and the USGP this year.    But they understand the situation and are behind us regardless.     But when you're a bike racer, you want to win bike races.      We did alot of work getting ready for the season and in the early USGP's to put ourselves in a good situation to try and win the series and to go in Louisville with a 42 point lead and come out with a 6point deficit is never a good thing.   And then not be able to race the finals in Bend!!    It just keeps pilling on.    At the end of the day all its going to take is more work and training on my end to get back in top form.    I'm not afraid of working hard and suffering so we will back there this year for sure






Will we see you in Madison? After that? How realistic is a return to top form this season? UCI racing runs late over in Europe...

That is the realistic goal right now.    I hope that I can be ready and race respectably there in January.     I want to go to Europe and race the final World Cups and Worlds and potentially into Feb.       I'm going to do my absolute maximum to recover from this set back and work towards achieving other goals this season.






With Euro Cross Camp out, what're you up to for the holidays?



I Have no plans right now, every time I have tried to make plans the last 3 weeks things change and it ends up costing me time and money.   So right now we are gonna just play things by ear so  I will probably end up staying home and train in the cold and snow because I need to be able to consistently monitor my progress with the guys at Rebound.    I haven't spent a christmas at home in 8yrs so it will be weird to be here in Dec.
  

I was pretty excited not only to be racing over in  Europe for the next few weeks,  but also spending time and getting to know some of the Junior and U23 rides a little better.    I think that we have some extremely talented racers coming up and any guidance and help I could have given those guys over there was something that I was looking forward to. 







Will you do commentary with us during the Live broadcast of USGP Bend? 

For sure I will,   It will be interesting and insightful for me to see our racing from the other side of the barriers as well.

Over the past three months, we’ve been treated to the best and most competitive racing in the country, boasting huge fields with marquee riders from across the globe. With the New England hotbed of cyclocross racing’s storied past, this season has been able to showcase the heritage through America’s best courses, while also, through the rapidly growing Amateur fields for both men and women, demonstrating that New England is also the future of cyclocross in America.

The NBX Gran Prix of Cross has long been the final round of the Verge Series, and for good reason. The courses boast long sand features, extremely technical wooded sections and long power sections. In short, Goddard Park in Warwick, Rhode Island, the host venue for NBX, is the epitome of ideal cyclocross – technical, challenging and unrelenting. This year’s edition has the added distinction of playing host to the final rounds of the Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series. The Shimano series, which is one of only a small handful of UCI conscripted series in the United States, boasts a prize list of $10,000, split evenly between the men and women.

The Elite Women’s racing at NBX will be top notch, as we will see the best racers on the East Coast. Matt Bodziony, the lead promoter of NBX has pledged equal prize money to the top 15 in the Elite Women’s race both days. Shimano Series leader Laura Van Gilder (C3 p/b Mellow Mushroom) will be aiming to defend her lead. She’s coming off a great weekend in Sterling at Bay State Cross where she picked up victory both days on vastly different courses and in different ways. Van Gilder is clearly a rider whose quiver contains diversity of strengths. Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles) comes into the weekend in hopes of dethroning Van Gilder and racking up some valuable UCI points in the run up to Nationals. Annis has performed admirably this season and is sure to give Van Gilder a run for her money. Also challenging for the wins this weekend will be teammates Andrea Smith and Crystal Anthony of LadiesFirst Racing. These two are relative newcomers to cyclocross but are constantly challenging for victory. Either one is capable of picking up a win or two this weekend. Local favorite Maureen Bruno Roy (Bob’s Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles) has begun to come on to the best form of her season over the past few weeks and thrives on technical courses like those at NBX. Don’t be surprised to see her on the top step this weekend.

On the Elite Men’s side, there is a great, season-long battle between Luke Keough (Champion System p/b Keough Cyclocross) and Justin Lindine (bikereg.com/Joe’s Garage) that will come to a close with the $10,000 Showdown in Rhode Island. Keough is making a return from a short European trip where he competed in the U23 race at the Koksijde World Cup. Luke Keough is, in simplest terms, a winner. He has a singular focus and the determination to make vision a reality, and right now, his vision is to take home top honors in both the Elite and U23 divisions of the Shimano Series. Lindine, meanwhile, came out this season with absolute dominance, holding a winning streak that spanned nearly a month, with two victories at the Providence Cross Festival, among others. He came on to the national radar last season, but this has been a breakout year for the workingman.

On the hunt to spoil the Keough-Lindine rivalry include Dylan McNicholas (cyclocrossworld.com), who finally picked up a UCI victory last weekend in Sterling and is ready to dominate the end of the season. McNicholas is best known as a fast starter, but he’s found the ability to stay within himself and has strung together some of the best performances of his career in recent weeks. Currently, he’s positioned third in the Shimano Series, but he isn’t eliminated from overall contention and will definitely be gunning for that number one spot.

Jerome Townsend and Adam Myerson from the SmartStop/MOB are both hoping to take advantage of their great form and go a position or two better this weekend at NBX. Both showed last weekend they’ve got the fitness and the technique to be on the podium, but small mistakes cost them both the top steps they’d been hunting for.

Just confirmed last night, Mike Garrigan (Lapierre Canada) is going to be bringing his blisteringly fast starts to NBX. Garrigan was part of the group of Canadians that made a big impact on the early season in New England, his return means yet another great animator in the races of NBX.

There are also rumors circling that there will be some of the top names from the world’s stage at NBX. Stay tuned for more to come on that.

The Verge Series, which crowns the best Amateur, Juniors and Masters racers of New England, will be concluding this weekend and all the races will be tight until the last day. The Amateur and Junior Men’s races are both led by Team CF’s Peter Goguen, whose season has been extremely consistent. Not a flashy racer, but an incredible competitor, Goguen is finally getting his due in New England racing. Hot on Goguen’s heels is Nate Morse (cyclocrossworld.com). Morse is coming into NBX hoping to pick up the series championships before he leaves for Geoff Proctor’s Euro Cross Camp.

Brian Wilichoski (cyclocrossword.com) has tied up the Masters 35+ series, but there is a great battle for second with four racers in the hunt. Paul Richard (CCB) and Sam Morse (Corner Cycle) are battling for the top step in the 45+ series and will come down to the final race. Bill Sawyer (Gearworks/Spinarts) and David Goodwin (NCC) are head to head in the 55+ and are the tightest race coming into NBX.

The story of the season has been Ellen Noble (Portsmouth Trek) and her utter dominance of the Amateur Women’s field, which will be paid out $250 both days this weekend thanks to the fine folks of NBX Bikes. At only 15 years old, she’s picked up victories in nearly all the races she’s entered. Hers is a name to mark for the future. Behind Noble, there is a battle for second in the Amateur Women that carries over to the Masters Women. Lori Cooke (Cycle Lodge), Kathy Savary (Blue Steel Cyclery) and Karen Tripp (Blue Steel Cyclery) are all in contention for both the Amateur and the Masters. These three have all had impressive seasons and it’s anyone’s guess who will be on top at the end of the day Sunday. Finally, the 10-14 Juniors series is up for grabs among three of the finest young men in New England. Kevin Goguen (Team CF) is in the driver’s seat with Michael Owens (Bliss Racing Belgen Cycles) and Donnie Seib (bikeman.com) hot on his heels.

Jon Lewis from CycleOps Power will have his great trainer setup at NBX right near the starting grid so racers can warm up and cool down using the best trainers in a calm, focused and collegial environment, because we can all use a bit of the pro treatment. Racers should keep an eye out and plan to make use of his setup.

The weather was a bit more seasonally appropriate, with a coating of frost giving the early races fits, as the day went on, the frost cleared leaving a tricky, slick coating on the long off-cambered sections. This classic New England race has been a fixture for many years, but the Sunday course is a new creation, only a few years old. Taking advantage of the three levels of fields and their transitions, Tom Stevens creates a course that exemplifies the qualities of great cyclocross racing.

 

Elite Women

The women’s race started with an extremely fast pace, headed immediately by Van Gilder. Knowing that the first few course features would be decisive, she took to the front and led the field up the first set of stairs. Thanks to a pileup on the off-camber, the selection came very early in the day. At the front, the group was Van Gilder, Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles) and the trio from LadiesFirst, Andrea Smith, Crystal Anthony and Elle Anderson.

The group of five worked well together, with Van Gilder either driving the pace or sitting second wheel, to ensure that she was not taken by any team action from the LadiesFirst racers. Crystal Anthony spent a good portion of the race on the front, trying for payback from Saturday’s intense disappointment where a broken fork cost her a chance at the podium. At the back of the group, it seemed like Sally Annis was in constant trouble, yo-yoing off the back, often sitting three or four bike lengths off the end.

The decision came in two parts, first, Smith missed a technical remount with a lap and a half left and was hung up on a fence for a moment, at which point, the pace picked up and Annis rejoined – sitting directly behind Van Gilder. Anthony launched an attack that was quickly covered and countered by Van Gilder, with a half lap to go. Van Gilder put together a few seconds advantage and was able to raise her hands alone in victory. Behind, Annis outsprinted Anthony for second. Smith crossed the line fourth after recovering and passing Anderson, who came fifth.

 

Elite Men

On a normal weekend, Dylan McNicholas sets the pace, but a poor start forced him to start chasing early. Jerome Townsend (SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley) took the holeshot and initiated the selection. After the first lap, the group had been whittled down to Townsend, his teammate Adam Myerson, McNicholas, Justin Lindine (bikereg.com/Joe’s Garage) and Canadian mountain biker Raphael Gagne (Rocky Mountain Factory) with a chasing group led by JAM Fund/NCC teammates Jeremy Durrin and Alec Donahue.

From the chase, Donahue attacked the chase to which Durrin bridged and continued to the front, while Donahue, having done his part, returned to the group.

With five laps to go, McNicholas put in a hard attack and very quickly picked up a ten second advantage, catching Lindine out and drove the pace solo at the front. While McNicholas turned the screws, eventually building a gap nearing twenty seconds, Townsend fell off the chase, leaving a group of Myerson, Gagne, Durrin and Lindine. Lindine was often setting the pace, but being surrounded by quality sprinters, he knew not to do too much of the work. The group clearly had strong legs, but McNicholas took advantage of being able to dictate his rhythm and powered away to his second win of the weekend. The victory was McNicholas’s first UCI win of the season, in the wake of numerous podiums.

With two laps to go, Myerson was third wheel in the group and slid on a muddy step, breaking the group in half, giving Durrin and Gagne the opportunity to battle for second. As Myerson assorted himself with Lindine behind, Durrin took to the front and stretched the gap to fourth. The NCC racer, looking for his first-ever UCI podium, dragged the Canadian around the course only allowing Gagne to pull through once it was clear that the chase would not catch them. From that point, Gagne maintained position until a serious attack with half a lap to go that Durrin could not match. Gagne pulled in second, clearly pleased with his position. Durrin’s third-place is a great result heading into his European campaign which begins next weekend in Igorre, Spain. The battle for fourth was won by Myerson, who bested Lindine.

 

The Verge New England Cyclo-Cross Series and the Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series both culminate next weekend at the NBX Gran Prix of Cross in Warwick, Rhode Island. This weekend’s racing, the twelfth and thirteenth races in the Verge New England Cyclo-Cross Series, has traditionally fallen on the last weekend of November and is often marked by frozen off-cambers and an icy run up. This year, however, the temperatures reached well into the 60’s as over 500 racers took on the classic, Tom Stevens-designed course. The Saturday’s course features the infamous horse-jump, a run up with a technical approach, stairs, planks and enough off-cambers to reward only the most technically sound racers.

 

Elite Women

 

From the start, Rebecca Wellons (Quad Cycles) grabbed the holeshot and drove the early pace. Wellons, a past winner of the Verge Series, has been coming onto form and was joined by Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom p/b C3), Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles) and a trio of LadiesFirst Racing women in Andrea Smith, Crystal Anthony and Elle Anderson. A late first-lap crash by Van Gilder caused a bit of a disruption in the group, leaving Wellons behind and forcing Anderson to chase.

As the race wore on, the group of four – Van Gilder, Anthony, Smith and Annis, were testing one-another, but were mainly fighting for position through the most technical parts of the course. With a lap and a half to go, Anthony had a disaster of a mechanical – a broken fork after a poor pass through the planks, forcing her to run nearly half a lap, leaving the group at the front at three. With a fairly straightforward finale, the ball was clearly in Van Gilder’s court. Annis attempted to make a gap, but Van Gilder overtook her and led the race into the final turn, holding off Annis and Smith with relative ease. Annis came across second, ahead of Smith. Elle Anderson crossed the line fourth with Wellons in fifth. Anthony, despite her long run held on for sixth.

 

Elite Men

 

This weekend’s racing is the final tune up for Justin Lindine (bikereg.com/Joe’s Garage) coming into the Shimano Series finale next weekend. He’s been a bit off of his early season form and was hoping to return to his winning ways at Bay State. Dylan McNicholas (cyclocrossworld.com), of course, had other plans.

McNicholas, as he is accustomed, took the reigns of the race from the gun, leading into the first run up, when he and Jerome Townsend (SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley) got tangled up. This tangle allowed the JAM Fund/NCC prodigal son, Jeremy Durrin an opportunity that he quickly seized. Durrin rode the first two laps alone off the front, with a small group chasing. Behind, the chase was between Lindine, Townsend and McNicholas, the latter two back to form following their crash up. As the laps went on, Durrin was brought back, largely through Lindine’s hard charging and unceremoniously shot out the back. The front was, then, Lindine, Townsend and McNicholas, with Durrin driving to regain the leaders along with Canadian, Raphael Gagne (Rocky Mountain Factory).

The leaders were a battle of small mistakes, with Townsend and McNicholas both bobbling on the stairs, with Townsend forced to pit twice. The second time Townsend was forced to pit, Lindine and McNicholas got a gap and held it for the final lap and a half. At the front, McNicholas and Lindine were working together until the last half lap, when Lindine pulled through and attempted to create space, but McNicholas held fast to the wheel through the final corner. McNicholas came around Lindine in an all-out sprint for the victory. Townsend held on for third ahead of Durrin. Gagne maintained fifth ahead of Adam Myerson (SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley) and Joseph Welsh (Raleigh All Stars).

Championship.  Even more impressively,
Dallaire (who rides for RacinÂ’ for Riley presented by Alderfer-Bergen) secured
her second consecutive perfect score in Zipp OVCX action with one race to go.  Dallaire is undefeated on the Tour this
season with seven wins in a championship that counts a racerÂ’s best seven races
toward the season points title.

 

While
Dallaire has been dominant, Zipp OVCXÂ’s Elite Men and Masters divisions head
into the year’s final race at Ohio’s Kingswood Park with the closest points battles in memory.  The Elite Men’s race on December 4 will start
with three riders from three of the MidwestÂ’s biggest teams having legitimate
opportunities to win the season title.  Rob
Kendall of BobÂ’s Red Mill, Luke Haley of Red Zone and Shawn Adams of
Cycle-Smart will be the three main protagonists, with Ray Smith of BobÂ’s Red
Mill waiting to pick up the title if all three falter.  Kendall is currently in the driver’s seat
with both the highest points total so far and the lowest potential drop
score. 

 

While
the Elite MenÂ’s championship is close, the MenÂ’s Masters 35+ is a virtual dead
heat with just one point separating current points leader Brian Schworm (Pedal
Power Cycling) from Micah Fritzinger (Schellers Fitness & Cycling).  But even a one-point difference does not
convey the competitiveness of the Zipp OVCX 35+ division.  While Schworm and Fritzinger each have their
full quota of seven scores and are looking to improve on their lowest score,
DRT RacingÂ’s Andy Messer sits in third place in the standings with only six of
the seven races he needs and the highest average score of anybody in the
division.  Messer has won the Masters
division in the past three races, setting himself up for a last-second,
come-from-behind lunge at the title.

 

The
WomenÂ’s 35+ is a bit more defined as Geraldine Schulze needs only to keep
within a few places of her Bio-Wheels/Reece-Campbell Construction teammate Malissa
Petrov to take the crown.  In the Men’s
45+, Frederick Rose of BikeReg.com has a comfortable lead over Keith Lucas (Schellers
Racing Team). 

 

In
the Elite Juniors, it looks as though the season-ending Kings CX on December 4
will be the culmination of a very successful year for LouisvilleÂ’s Red Zone
Cycling Team on the Zipp OVCX Tour.  Led
by Nick Dietrich and Katherine Santos, Red Zone holds the top five positions in
the Men’s U19 and two of the top four positions in the Women’s U19.  Only Rachel Dobrozsi and Mackenzie Green of
Cincinnati’s Queen City Wheel – Lionhearts club have been able to interrupt a
complete sweep by Red Zone. 

 

As
noted, the final race of the 2011 Zipp OVCX Cyclocross Tour presented by Papa
John’s will be the Kings CX at Mason, Ohio’s Kingswood Park on December 4.  The race will be part of a double-header
weekend that includes the USAC Midwest Masters and Juniors Regional
Cyclocross Championships at the same venue the previous day.  Details for both events can be found by
