Breckenridge gave the racers of the Breck Epic a break today, reverting to its more typical beautiful weather.

Unfortunately for the rest of the Open Men's field, South African Ben Melt Swanepoel thrives when the sun shines. He put a second stage win in the bag today, and moved a little further back up in the GC. He is now just nine and a half minutes down on the very consistent Ben Sonntag. Sonntag has been third every day thus far, but he holds the top position in the general classification. Since my buddy Al Trautwig isn't here to ask stupid questions so the people at home can go "Oh yeah, I knew that...GC, general classification, Sonntag has spent the least time riding his bike cumulatively over three stages, OBVIOUSLY. Jeez Al, why are you so dumb?" I will tell you that, while Sonntag has not won a stage he has...spent the least time riding his bike cumulatively over three stages, so he is the leader overall. It's just like the Le Tour De Le France Le at the Breck Epic, only with more beer and less EPO.

Ben Melt had some help from his Squirt Lube teammate Matthys Beukes. Having spent the better part of the summer chasing the NUE Series, I have come to know Ben Melt as as an extremely decent sportsman and just an all around nice guy. The type of guy who would give his helpful teammate (who is farther down in the GC) the win if he worked for him for an entire stage. Ben Melt is that sort of athlete, but Beukes had fueling issues and faded on a climb late in the race, telling Ben Melt to go on without him. Sonntag was able to overtake Beukes and land himself in the second spot. I'd be surprised if we don't see a stage win from Beukes by the end of the week.

24 hour racing phenom Josh Tostado finished fourth and another repeated top-fiver and former collegiate racing superstar Rotem Ishay finished fifth. Yesterday's winner Calle Friberg of Sweden came in sixth while former holder of the second GC spot Nick Truitt rolled in seventh after snapping a derailleur cable (Shimano neutral support was able to get him going again quickly). Nick fell to fifth in the overall.

The GC is looking pretty spread out after Ben Melt Swanepoel. He sits just ten minutes back on Ben Sonntag but behind him the gaps rapidly rise into the twenties. But, as anyof the racers will tell you, anything can happen — flats, mechanicals, crashes, Barry Wicks at BC Bike Race blow ups, or bear attacks.

In the Open Women's race things stayed interesting. Karen Jarchow who sat third in the GC and finished second on stage 2  had some serious issues today, succumbing to a dairy allergy after a polluted smoothie. She lost her guts all over French Pass, reluctantly dropping out at aid station one. This is Karen's first year mountain bike racing, watch for good things from her in the near future.

Overall leader Amanda Carey and second place overall Yolandi Du Toit rode most of the day together, Carey taking the stage win by just a few seconds. Carey has gone into "lead management" mode, trying not to make any mistakes while protecting her advantage. DuToit is ten minutes down, but that is just a flat tire away from the top podium spot. The battle between Carey and Du Toit is the classic struggle between the climber in Du Toit and the descender in Carey. The rest of the week should prove entertaining.

A definitive leap was made by Brady Kappius in the Singlespeed Stage Race World Championship due to a mechanical on the part of Macky Franklin. Macky's cleat tore loose, becoming lodged in his pedal forcing him to hobble through the majority of today's stage far from capacity. Still he only finished abot five minutes down on Kappius. Watch for Macky to turn a pedal (that hopefully remains attached to his crank arm) in anger later this week to make up that deficit. Third place Dax Massey fell a little further back in the GC today, but nothing that having his competitors attacked by a Sasquatch or kidnapped by hillbillies can't fix.

In the Open Duo Men's category Blake Harlan and Bryan Alders KILLED it, finishing frimly in the top ten overall. Their closest rivals, Rich Dillen and Peter Keiller finished firmly in the top...two hundred and fifty. If they had ridden into the Pacific time zone through a worm hole on Georgia Gulch, they still would have lost time to Blake and Bryan. They are that bad at going fast on bicycles.

Tomorrow's stage is going to have lots of climbing and it's going to be wicked hard. Oh wait, every stage of the Breck Epic has lots of climbing and is wicked hard. Tomorrow's stage is going to be like that...only more so.
