Hey Phil, you did your job, thats what your there to do. not a problem there. You did however, act like a condescending with your choice of words. I was there. Saying this is "real racing" as to say what we do is not. We are the ones that work a full time job, have a family and then still find time to train and race. I think we are all aware of the caliber of racing we are watching and supporting. Without fans, what is the point. Hello Phil? This isnt the first time you have acted like a bully in the way you speak. Think about the way you act before you come back to Louisville, you know how this works Phil. Your a former racer yourself, treat your own w/ respect in order to get it. This isnt Washington, you cant force respect.

@ not amused

I am sorry if I was wrong. I saw a 12 year old girl with her father, but neither of them appeared shocked or offended.
Its unfortunate if young kids saw Sally, but again from my vantage point, I never saw any.
Again, sorry if I was wrong.

No small children- huh..... Why did my daughter ask "Why is there a blow up person over there?" and "Why are there dollar bills taped to her boobs?" Clearly the people involved were oblivious of who was around and would see what was going on. And to say that "...they would have had the common sense to keep walking to another part of the course." This was all happening 3 tents away from the LionHearts Juniors Team tent......

Hi Phil,

As one of this past weekends attendees, I'd like to start by saying that I've only been to a handful of cross races, but I will stand by my statement that it was the most fun I have ever had at a bike race. No track event, criterium or road race I have ever attended compared to this experience. I laughed so hard I had to try and catch my breath. This is something that cycling needs; Fun.
I'd like to break down some of the points listed below.
1. Our corner had more folks stopping by because we were having FUN. The more that stopped by, the more fun we had.
2. If the riders are not in contention, and they KNOW it, they are just going try to have fun. The greenback just gave them an opportunity for bragging rights for having the skills to take it off Sally.
3. The waffle hand-ups were done in fun yet no rider in contention wanted one but off the backers were screaming for them. This tells me that the riders appreciate the handups, regardless of what they are.
4. No small children were around, to my knowledge, for the Sally/Sam affair. And if any parent saw Sally/Sam, they would have had the common sense to keep walking to another part of the course.
Even Elite riders have bad days and they should at least be able to make light of a bad day by having a little fun by taking a dollar, or waffle, or drink or ...? When bicycle racing becomes mundane and/or no fun, riders move on to other pursuits in life. Put the fun back in bike racing and it will be better for the riders AND the fans!
Thanks for reading.

Guilty as charged. Fun is fun, and in lower level events we tend to look the other way at this (including the 2/3 l'affaire waffle - yes, we knew about it, no we didn't stop it).

In the Elite events, people are racing for the points that get World Cup call ups and in this case some pretty good money. Hand ups are part of the rules that govern a serious sport, and a bad hand up can easily result in a crash that can end a season or a career.
I realize those points are lost after a few brews, but at some point we also have to protect the athletes, especially in an event as important as USGP. Fun is fun, but it can't interfere with safety and the competition itself. We don't make judgements based on what is handed up - beer, waffles, dollars - it really isn't part of the sport AT THIS LEVEL. I do remember a CX years ago where the beer bottle was placed on a barrier - the resulting crash sent two riders to the hospital.
Is that the fun I was trying to spoil? You bet it was.

That corner of the course was great all weekend! Those guys were handing up waffles during Saturdays 2/3 men's race. As far as inappropriate...it was all done in fun and almost all who walked by thought it was hilarious

That beats J Pow's rubber chicken hand-up.

Not sure how I feel about Sally or Sam, but this seems to portray the UCI pretty accurately, eh? Just sort of sums up exactly what you'd expect from a UCI official.
