Whoa boys, calm down before ya hurt yourselves!

It's a fare argument for THIS WEEK weather Page or Powers deserves the top stop. Over the past 10 years, yes Page is tops and everybody knows it (especially Johnson, Powers, etc.) For THIS WEEK however, I have to agree that Powers just edges out Page. When Page was here in the USA he had two weeks to aclamate before Madison and still got smoked by MINUTES by Powers and Johnson. Powers went over to Euroland just a couple days ahead of the WC and finished just SECONDS behind Page.

Now Johnson vs. Driscoll, I'll argue. Give it to the kid for the week. He earned it by racing smarter.

Dave McElwaine F 2 years ago

Are you smoking something? Page's current and past record means he belongs in the Major Leagues.....which is the world cup circuit. Everything else is the minor leagues in comparison. I really don't get the Page haters. Sure he throws some fits but lots of top athletes have done the same.

Page has two top tens at the world championships, three top tens at world cups, 9 top tens in major Euro races, 3 major wins in the USA during the past 2 years, AND is a three-time USA National Champion. He is the best cyclocrosser to come out of this country ever.

Jon will admit he does not travel well which affects his performance in the USA. The Green Machine had to travel to race in the big leagues last week and probably suffered a similar weakening of normal performance. Have you ever heard anyone say Jon is really better than he appears in the USA because of changing up to 9 time zones. Of course not.

Look. For this week JP deserves top spot. This is a ranking for this week. Next week could be a different story. Tim Johnson is the toughest bike rider I have ever had the pleasure to know and watch race. He knows I respect him and certainly have helped to highlight his many accomplishments.....including this photo that ran all over the country http://www.trailwatch.net/cross07/kansas/kansas.html

Consider these Page accomplishments....
2009 UCI World Cup, Igorre, Spain: 8th
2009 UCI World Cup, Hoogerheide, Belgium: 8th
2009 Union Cycliste Petange, Luxembourg: 3rd
2009 Nacht van Woerden, Woerden Holland: 7th
2009 Rad Racing, Lakewood, WA, USA: 1st
2009 Great Brewers Grand Prix of Gloucester, MA, USA: 1st
2008 USA Planet Bike Cup: 1st
2008 Vlaamse Houtlandcross, Belgium: 5th
2007 UCI World Cyclo-cross Championships, Hooglede-Gits: 2nd
2007 Cyclo-cross Gazet van Antwerpen (Oostmalle), Belgium: 3rd
2006 Super Prestige Series Overall: 10th
2006 World Championships Zeddam, NL: 10th
2006 Petange, LUX UCI Cat. 2: 1st
2005 Middlekerke, BE UCI Cat. 2: 3rd
2005 Gieten, NL Super Prestige #5: 7th place
2005 Cyclocross World Cup Lanarvily, France: 10th
2004 Dottignies Cross, BE (UCI C2): 4th
2004 Ardooie Cross, BE (UCI C2): 3rd
2004 US National Cyclocross Champion
2003 US National Cyclocross Champion
2002 US National Cyclocross Champion

Best UCI racing record ever. If it were your record where would you want to race?

@Dave

I hate to sound like a C'dale p/b CXWorld evangelist (or Page hater) but how can you not recognized that the Powers and Johnson have beaten Page (and the rest of the field) in every US race? Powers only lost out by a couple seconds to Page in Aigle. I could see if he finished several mins back that he would drop in rankings but that wasn't the case.

Also, Page racing in Europe doesn't give him extra cred. It's like moving a pitcher to the majors when he can't win a game in the minors. I don't get it...

ROSS 2 years ago

Treefarm both days in KY! Whatch it happen!! And Wicks 3rd! Barry's back baby!

Dave McElwaine F 2 years ago

OK. Here goes. I think it is time to give JP his due. He beat the Green Machine as I predicted at Aigle fair and square. That gets him a number one ranking this week. Furthermore, I will state in advance that if he places in the top 15 at Plzen, CZE I will continue to rank him 1st regardless of what happens in the USA. The competition level there is just that high....and you have to give Jon credit for being at a world cup rather than doing a race in his home country. Only regional stars go home. Can you imagine if Nys and Stybar skipped a world cup to do a series in their home countries?

I agree that Jeremy Powers is hotter than Johnson right now. What I can't decide is whether we have reached the point where Power's rising star has now passed Johnson's. We all know that Tim can't ride at this level too much longer and a shifting of team leaders is inevitable. Having said that, Johnson has plenty of wins left in him.

Jesse Anthony now deserves to be in the top ten as does Davide Frattini. I have enormous respect for the Todd Wells and am placing him there despite his lack of racing. Due to the demands of his mtb season he always eases into cyclocross....but in the end he is never out of the top ten.

http://www.trailwatch.net/2009/cross/louisville/imgpages/image044.html

For the women, I am only reversing Dombroski and Butler from my list last week. Amy beat Sue by 24 seconds in Aigle. That is a lot in a cross race. Do you know how far you can ride in 24 seconds....a long way. While I expect katerina to pull off an upset in the Czech Republic, I will continue to rank Katie Compton first until Katerina beats her in head-to-head competition. Respect. Compton. Period.

SoCalCat,
Loving the passion and the idea. Let's make it happen!

Cross Dads,
Junior rankings are coming later in the season!

Everyone,
Forgot to mention two big names not in these rankings that will be making their "2010 'Cross Debut" in Louisville this weekend. Well, not exactly, but it will be their first big races where we will expect to see them near 100%. Those riders are Brady Kappius (Clif Bar) and Zach McDonald (Rapha/ Focus). This will be the first time this season we see some of the U23 powers in the same race!! Summerhill vs. McDonald vs. Keough, etc. Going to be good! Also, keep an eye out for U23 rider Skyler Trujillo (former Junior MTB National Champ!)

SoCalCat 2 years ago

These are sweet, thanks! The more the cyclocross season comes together as one 4-5 month "stage race" and less scattered the better for the sport. And I think a ranking like this really does a lot to unite the sport and make it more like an NBA, NFL, etc other type of sports league. I don't see how it could ever happen but it would be awesome to have a NCL 'National Cyclocross League" with teams of 4-7, a draft, 20 defined races, each rider bust compete in at least 16, top 3 teammates from each race score, points are eared throughout the season to qualify for a "play offs" followed by a 1 day national championship which could be sort of like NCAA cross county running where the top X teams make it along with the top X individuals who's team didn't qualify. There'd be a team champ and individual champ. then we could incorporate this into the high school leagues, then college clubs, then varsity sport in college, then ESPN, huge sponsorship dollars, and we all live happily ever after... Thoughts?

Dave McElwaine F 2 years ago

Thinking about Loooville. The course is likely to be flat with the exception of the Green Monster which Ryan and Barry take in about two steps. With the rain that is expected, the advantage goes slightly to Cannondale. No male racer has ever won both days at Louisville. Nash did it last year for the women

Only three people have won at Louisville. Johnson has won one day each of the three years. Ryan has won twice, and Powers took the inaugural victory.

http://www.trailwatch.net/2008/cross/louisville/sat/imgpages/image013.html

I expect more of the same this year. Flip a coin for those three guys.

Only three other guys have made the podium at Loooville: Wicks, Driscoll, and Anthony. If you throw in Todd Wells, you have a list of the only guys with a solid shot at making the podium. I have been saying for weeks to watch for Jesse Anthony.....now it is time to watch for Wells. He is gradually building for a run at the national championship.

I second the Junior rankings

@eurotrash/@karlh

how do you explain page getting smoked in Madison by powers and johnson??? to me j page is just a book of excuses: "they beat me up" "you stole my line" "team tactics" and now "i had bad legs"... if anyone is going to have bad legs it's gonna be someone who flew across the atlantic. powers said he had decent legs because he's gonna be honest. he along with his teammates (and page) made up 25-ish positions which is awesome. i'd call that results of aigle a wash for the american contingency and i'm basing my picks on what's been done in previous results.

Colt McElwaine 2 years ago

Karlh, Evan McNeely ADDED. We may have overlooked that 5th a little too much. What happened to him on Sunday? I'd love to see him move up the rankings some back to back solid days. Thanks for the input.

It kills me to put Natasha all the way in 12th, but the women in front of her are no joke. I believe they have all beaten her at least once this year and a lot of them have gotten better since the last time they faced. Where would you put her?

Karlh 2 years ago

Agree we eurotrash... If youre going to run anywhere you are going to run to the U.S. Page with bad legs beat the CXWorld guys.. Powers did really well so he should be up there; its tough to say whether or not page or powers was better. Powers did just travel there but said he had good legs. Page had to travel but not as far but said he had bad legs. It's fair that he is second.

Evan McNeely the U23 from Canada should be on the list COLT!!! 5th place first day Toronto UCI starting 4th row. Rode with guys like Derrick St John, Andrew Watson, Aron Schooler, and even Davide at the beggining. He also got 3rd U23 from starting last row at Gloucester. He is obviously on form.. put him in there

Natasha Elliot should be farther up... Although the true test will be next weekend she showed great form in Toronto UCI Day 1 and 2

AND.. put driscoll ahead of Johnson FOR SURE... starting hard dosent mean much. He blew because he didnt have the fitness to hold on. For them it's a 1hr race not 30 min.

How about some Junior rankings on here?

Myerson is a legand, real talk. Half the cats in this game wouldn't know a 'cross bike from a mountain bike if it weren't for AHM. Respect.

After looking at the start list for Louisville (Thanks G Block) I'm going to have to pick Amanda Carey for a top 5! She raced a bit of 'cross last year and did VERY well. My women's picks are:

LVG
Gould
Miller
Butler
Carey

Men:
Johnson
Powers
Driscoll
Anthony
Trebon

50 deep!? How the F do you even know and keep track of all these people! Glad someone's doing it..

eurotrash 2 years ago

Page ran scared back to Europe? I thought he went back to train and race Cyclocross at the highest level while the rest of the US guys played make believe stateside... Page beat Powers, Driscoll, and a pathetic Johnson. He should be #1, handsdown.

Dave McElwaine F 2 years ago

News Flash Guys...Katerina Nash will NOT be racing in Louisville. As I said last week, the world cup in the Czech Republic this weekend may be the biggest date on her calendar. It is also her Dad's 60th birthday this weekend. She will most likely be battling Daphny Van Den Brand who is no slouch. The Czech crowd was so crazy for Katerina at Worlds that I could barely get close to her for an interview. I expect Katerina to get her world championship revenge this weekend.

Sooo....Georgia Gould is the ONLY woman racing in Louisville who has ever won there. She is also the ONLY woman racing who has ever been on the podium there. Dombroski/ Compton/ Nash will all be absent this weekend. It is likely to be up to Sue Butler, Laura Van Gilder, and Meredith Miller to give Gould some competition. Georgia is fresh and has been training like a maniac in Fort Collins.

For the record, the only women I recall making the podium at Louisville are Compton, Nash, Gould, Dombroski, Sydor, and Lloyd.

I will check in later with my rankings.

-=Dave from Trailwatch.net

pete 2 years ago

disagree with j page ranking 2nd. granted he finished barely ahead of powers and a min or 2 ahead of johnson and driscoll but he also ran scared to europe so he didn't have to deal with the powerhouse that is TEAM c'dale p/b cxworld. look at the UCI rankings that were released today:

1. powers
2. johnson
3. mourey
4. trebon
5. frattini
6. driscoll
7. page
8. jones
9. st john
10. kabush
...

and if you don't think the US points are worth as much as the euro one's that's bullshit. the eurotrash are free to come scap in our playground if they want 'em.

'crosserx 2 years ago

I think Myerson belongs right were you have him in ~20th. He's on some great form obviously to finish 4th at Granogue but lets not get too carried away with that. 16 of the top 20 weren't even there. And there are a lot of guys he has not raced this season that you have ranked behind him. There are quite a few guys between 30-40 who have beat him this season too. He's been up and down, if he can hold this form for a couple more weekends then I have no problem keeping him in the 18th-23th range.
