Luke, you're dead wrong my friend. East Coast started 'cross in the states. In many ways, racing like Cross Crusade came out of not being able to compete with the racing on the East. They couldn't attract the top guys away from New England/ Mid Atlantic no matter how well run their UCI races were, so they made their races more fun instead. The scene is so big in the North East now that tere's room for both Fun and Business 'cross. The fact that this race was Wednesday night was a huge part of it's successes. It's not having to compete with Gloucester and Providence on the calendar and so people can let there hair down and play in the mud! Fun, well promoted, weeknight races with as much prize money as possible... that's the magic formula for East Coast 'Cross. |

Rusty, the secret ingredient (well, one of the more important ones anyway) is the team behind the scenes. These guys and gals put Fun on the top of their list where so many other race directors spend all there time worrying about how much cash they can make charging for parking and how many miles of snow fencing they can hang with sponsors logos. UCI racing has exploded in the US and that's great for the pro's and it trickles dow to us, but the rest of us just want to have a blast racing our bikes. Think Cross Crusade in New England. Anyone want to step up and take the wheel? |
