wow, has he stepped down to cat 1 yet? or is he still saying he's a "pro" to get laid?

Kathryn LaPointe 2 years ago

Newish here, so wondering what the "value is in racing a more suitable category." Sometimes the Cat 1 women are on course with the pro men, and the guys lap them all. Passing slower riders builds cyclocross skills. Getting passed builds character. Isn't it harder to line up when you know you'll be pack fill? And, for the guys at the front, you get the thrill of victory of beating 26 people instead of 25. Go ahead and flame me, but it's a honest question.

My bias: I DIDN'T have the legs, nor the force of will, to stay up in Cat 1, and wish there were more people, of any fitness, in my current category. You're always welcome in singlespeed, Derek.

The more Pro riders that register that helps make the purse.$$ It is about trying to help the top pro's get payed .

Exactly Derek, That's what I mean. Let's say Overalls, so at least you get 2 races in. So as of now...Tinker squeaks in, Trebon and the rest of you guys are out haha. We have no one at USA Cycling giving a crap about Upgrades and these guys are worried about Downgrades??? Gimme a break.

Ok, in just the season opener or at the end of the year. What about endurance racing,Stage racing Super-D and local series? Have you ever raced as a Pro? We are always looking for a way to make the sport better.

What, anyone who isn't in the Top 20 gets kicked down?

Thanks Scott, Ya that flat in the Super-D did help things much eather. Great Race this weekend best Bonelli Course ever. Congrats on Team Sho-Air.

To all:

I just want to say that I support Derek 100% although he may not be up to speed at this time or at a National level, he is a great ambassador for the sport and he always is the first to offer a helping hand to anyone in need at these events, and one of the first to sign up. He is always welcome to race in the Pro class at anyone of the events we promote as he is a first class individual and a great sport.
Keep it up Derek and have fun.

Derek, we didn't recieve your Fax on the weekend? Who did you send it to?

Derek Hermon 2 years ago

Get your facts straight. Yes this weekend was not good for me but watch and see. In endurance and state level I still get results. I have won lot's of cat 1 races and will again. Derek.

I hear you. Cat 1 is coming, Hard to let it go.This will be my last season as a Pro more for endurance racing and local racing where I still get results. Last year had the #1 ranking pro Super -D in the US, 2nd 24 hours Nationals, top 3 at 12 hour solo races, good state XC results won a bunch of Super- D races. Have been battling Heath problems. Allways good for the shop to get this press & photos. Thanks for the input Derek Hermon

I've been around for years, and Derek is a great guy. He's passionate, supports the sport of mountain biking, and is always up beat.

My only thought, is as a current CAT 1 Master's rider, we need more riders in the 40-50 divisions...it ends up being the same old guys battling every weekend.
Nothing against Derek, but he would better serve the sport by racing his respective CAT 1 division, and making the racing better on the amatuer level.

As a NORBA respresentative, Derek of all people should know the value of racers riding a class more suitable for their skill level.

The problem with and has been, is that being a "pro" is more of a status for some, than it defines what one does for a living and/or describes their ability.
Racing Pro as a master is admirable if your Tinker or Ned, but when guys insist on racing Pro, who consistently get lapped, or couldn't win their respective master age group, it bad for the sport in general.

Hey Ricky, Derek is a great guy and an ambassador of the sport. While he may not be competetive in the Pro field, he more than makes up for it with his support and enthusiasm for the sport.

When's Derek going to move to CAT 1's? Seems to me the winter isn't his only problem keeping pace with the Pro's.
