This one's been sitting in the Cyclingdirt vault for a while. I messed up the mic and so the sound quality is a little below par, but after taking another listen, what Sam has to say is just too good not to share. Since this interview, Sam has gone on to have his best start to a season ever. He placed top 30 at a World Cup, took 2nd at the Pan Am Championships, and has been a regular atop PRO XCT podium. The year ahead is going to be exciting!

James, shoot me an Email at Colt@Cyclingdirt.org, I've got something you'll enjoy.

As far as where to follow the sport, you found it! Right here at Cyclingdirt. What do you want to know? If we don't know we'll get it for you.

In 2008 I walked onto a race at the Sea Otter classic. It must have been the last 5 laps or so. Then crowd next to me was saying “ Oh he got blocked” another lap “He got passed”
I had no clue what was going on as that was the first time I ever attended anything to do with bikes. The announcer says something like “Who ever comes over that hill first will be the leader”. There was a long silent pause and then this rider appears coming over the blind top side of the hill. The crowed cheered as this guy throws up his arms crossing the finish line. Soon after there was a huge crowd of people around the winners. I sat down for about 20 min trying to figure out my next move. And there was still a small crowd around this one guy. I walked back to see what was going on. Bunch of reporter types snapping pictures and talking. Something about a Dad. I took a few pictures myself, moved on and while walking away I was thinking that was kinda cool. A few days later, picked up a news paper, there was an article on the front page saying that Sam Schultz recently turned Pro and defeated some French guy. That gave me the motivation to get out more often to ride my bike and thus I became a Schultz fan.

This year made it to the short track race, Started snapping pics of all the Subaru team riders. I didn’t know which one Sam was until the announcement. Different track this year. Ended up with some pretty cool pics and some of the top riders. Maybe next year I can get one autographed!
So, more Sam videos, this is a tough sport to follow! For an amateur like me how does one follow a team and find out where they will be racing at? This sport needs more publicity and I hope the superior athleticism earns these folks a living at what they do.

Sam is having a remarkable year so far. That 2nd at Pan Am Champs is a pretty huge result for a guy his age.
