BC Blog | Race Update 3 | Stages 2 & 3

Day 2, 70k- We awoke early in the morning on day two, packed into a bus that took us to a ferry, that finally dropped us onto Vancouver Island. We must say all the transportation so far has been worth the hassle. Day two treated us much better. The course suited our strengths, punchy climbs, lots of rocks, and lots of roots. The riding was very similar to the single track on the coast of Maine. About half way into the race we took a little detour. Instead of turning right off of the fire road into the single track, we followed a few other rider...

Cyclingdirt bloggers Andrew Freye and John Burns fly out tomorrow for their first attempt at the BC Bike Race. We have been following their training and preparations here for the last nine weeks as they ready themselves for seven tough days of racing in the Pro Men's Duo Race. BC Blog | Volume 7 | Training Camp

BC Bike Blog Vol. VII is mainly about the ‘training camp’ we hinted at last week. We spent four days based in the Western Maine wilderness with none of the following; cell phone coverage, internet, and paved roads. Sound like a good place for multi hour mountain bike rides, you’re right! The weather was perfect. Sunny and 70 every day! We even remembered to bring a fully charged camera this time. The pictures do some of the talking. The whole point of this training camp was for us to be in an environment where we could ride o...

BC Blog | Volume 6 | Almost There..

Wow we can’t believe six weeks have already passed! Where does the time go? Now that we look at the calendar we are finding out that there is just over three weeks left before the start of the BC Bike Race! Last week John finally purchased the plane tickets. We are going to fly out of Boston, MA and into Vancouver on Air Canada. John did a fair amount of research on all the different air line companies and Air Canada seems to be the best one. It only costs $50 per bike box to fly anywhere in North America. Not too shabby compared to some ...

BC Blog | Volume 4 | A Taste Of Canada

This past weekend we received our first taste of Canadian racing for 2009. We were up in Baie Saint Paul, Quebec for stop number one of the Canada Cup, a UCI 1 event. Racing at a UCI 1 cross country race is a lot different from the seven day stage race we are trying to prep for, but at the same time our entire season isn’t solely geared towards the BC Race. Some of you have asked what we do for training such how many hours are we putting in to prep for the BC race. Well in this week’s blog we will try and answer some of those questi...

BC Blog | Volume 2 | Logistics

So now that we’ve decided to enter the BC Bike Race it is time for us to start thinking about all the logistics that goes on with a seven day bike race. Planning for a one day national event out west is pretty hard to plan out, but a seven day race in a foreign country is a whole different game. Where to begin? Let’s start off with some of the rules of the BC Bike Race. Each racer is provided with a large duffel bag. All of the racers gear including sleeping bag must fit into the duffel bag. Now the duffel bag isn’t exactly g...

BC Blog | Volume 1 | Introductions

[Andrew Freye and John Burns will race as a team at this years BC Bike Race. We'll follow their journey as they manage real life, real jobs, and real dreams of becoming successful Pro Mountain Bikers.] Andrew Freye: I was fifteen when I first got started into racing my mountain bike. It was the summer of 1999 and I was preparing for my debut at Kents Hill School as a freshmen. Kents Hill is a private boarding school that I would be attending as a day student. Turns out mountain biking is a varsity fall sport at Kents Hill. In middle school mou...
