I think I had one too many "flabongos" last night. All right, maybe two too many. But I won. If waking up with a soul-crushing hangover can be considered winning. The flabongo is, as far as I know, the creation of Scott Wootten of Shenandoah Bicycle Company. It is a beer bong fashioned out of a plastic lawn ornament and it is the bringer of good times and pain. In the first two rounds of flabongo-ing I bested Rich Dillen and Tyler Mason Dixon Arnold. Dicky insisted on having it be a "shirts off" flabongo battle, for extra homo-eroticity points. I destroyed him both in the drinking contest and the man boobs contest. In my over-excitement I chest bumped the borderline-barfing little man...not what you should do when you have a broken rib. The video of that event my never make its way to the internet.

In the third and final (I think, Christ...I hope) round of flabongo-ing I got in over my head, coming face to face with a semi-professional drinker. He did that insane down-the-hatch thing while I was still chugging away with a bemused look on my face (again, a video you will not likely see). Then he started rattling off his palmares and naming drinking games that he had learned on boats in Michigan that I had never heard of. For some reason I agreed to a second round, about as good an idea as the chest bump. The flabongo fillers went a little nuts, pouring well over a beer into each flabongo (I love the word flabongo, I could say it all day — Flabongo, flabongo, flabongo). And this wasn't the light, cold, smooth Busch beer of the earlier flabongos; it was high-test New Belgium stuff. Round two went exactly like round one...until, just after downing his over-filled flabongo, buddy started projectile vomiting all over the Stokesville Campground. It looked like a special effect, like he had the stream of a firehose coming out of his mouth, and he didn't really stop talking during his protracted spew-fest either, "I guess you win man, y'know, competitive dr—BREEEEESHT! — inking rules apply, I for—FRAAAAAHP!—feit."

And the moral of that story kids, is that, whether it's bike racing or drinking beer out of plastic, pink flamingos, you should never give up.

Oh, I'm sorry, did you actually come over here for a race report?

Hold on...

It was a wet and crazy SM100.

Open Men:

The conditions didn't work well for Christian Tanguy who wears glasses and has to windshield-wiper them constantly during a rainy race. But still he was able to come from behind after a slow-ass flat fix to overtake Brandon Draugelis, Sam Koerber and Evan Plews to pull off a second place behind Jeremiah Bishop. Sam Koerber was the only dude who could hang with Bishop for most of the race, only cracking on the gigantic second-to-last climb, falling back to fourth place. Plews was able to gap up to Bishop briefly at the bottom of the Chestnut descent, but Bishop had one more hammer in his hammer quiver...which he dropped. Tanguy blew past a crushed Plews on the final climb before the descent to Stokesville Campground.

Brandon Draugelis finished sixth, sandwiched between two XC guys, neither of whom had ever done a hundred mile mountain bike race before. Aaron Snyder moaned his cramped self to fifth place while Brian Astell was super-stoked to pull off a top ten result at this first hundred, ripping to a solid seventh. Astell is also the sick bike handler who finished second at the Six Pack downhill a couple nights before the SM100.

Women's Race:

To put it tactfully, Sue Haywood doused the rest of the women's field with gasoline, lit them on fire, and threw them off a building. Second place Karen Potter was over forty five minutes back and third place Kathleen Harding was even farther back than that. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Cheryl Sornson or Amanda Carey shown up. Although Haywood is a great bike racer, her flabongo skills are lacking. She spilled most of the flabongo she attempted to slam at the finish.

Singlespeed race

In a huge shake up, Pat Blair from Baltimore nipped some guy...not sure what his name was, in the final miles to pull off his second NUE series win.

I'm just kidding Ron Harding baby.

Ron Harding lead most of the race with Blair just a few beats off, hunting him down. He couldn't hold him off till the end though. If Ron had won SM100 he would have had a chance to take the series overall title with a win over Pflug at Fool's Gold, but now Ron will be sitting out the final race, citing lack of vacation time.

Gordon Wadsworth took the third podium spot while Gerry Pflug pulled the...pflug. Opting to save some energy for Fool's Gold, the last Kenda NUE Series race in Dahlonega, Georgia next weekend.

Master's Race:

Another great late race shake up in this category.
In the absence of Ron "It's all right to call me the formerly obese chain smoker turned super-fast-bike-racer" Sanborn, Roger "Mecha-Kong" Masse was favored for the win, but Bob "I take off my pants one leg at a time, just like everyone else, but once my pants are off...I make incredibly fast bike racer babies" Koerber looked unbelievably good early on. He was over forty minutes ahead of Masse at one point, sitting in eight place OVERALL three hours in.

And then he blew, big time. Roger didn't even see Bob when he rolled through Aid #5. He did see him when Bob passed him back a little while later. Masse chased Koerber back down on the final singletrack descent to the campground and Bob, not knowing that Masse was in his class — "He looked way too young!" — let him by with just meters to go in the race.

And that's some good bike racing.

I just have one question: if you walk out to your miniature van in your drawers and begin booting all over the lawn of the Stokesville Lodge and no one's there to see it, is it still one of the most pathetic moments of your life?

I guess there's "pulling the Pflug" and then there's "blowing the Pflug." Wait, that didn't come out right.

Post race interviews (lots of them) and crazy-good highlights to come. Check back soon.
